Shivaji Bhosale (1630-1680 C.E.) was a great warrior King of Marathas who established the Maratha Empire. He was born in 1630 to Shahaji Bhosale and Jijabai near the city of Junnar in Pune district, Maharashtra. Shivaji Bhosale is popularly known as Chhatrapati Shivaji.
Scholars have two different opinions on the exact date of his birth. The one group propose February 19, 1630 and the other proposes April 6, 1627 as the birth date of Chhatrapati Shivaji.
The date of February 19, 1630 has been accepted as the birth anniversary of Shivaji Jayanti by the government of Maharashtra. However, very few people realize that this date is marked on Julian calendar and not on the Gregorian calendar currently used throughout the world. We would like to quote from one of the articles in our archive -
"Whether the birth year of the Maratha hero is 1627 or 1630 is also a question that occupied historians for long. However, while 1630 was determined as the birth year with the help of historical documents, the question of birth date remained unanswered for long.
For a final word on the matter, the Maharashtra government set up a committee of historians in 1968. The committee, headed by M.N. Dixit, had as its members Babasaheb Purandare, Datto Vaman Potdar, G.H. Khare, B.C. Bendre, N.R. Phatak and first chancellor of Kolhapur's Shivaji University Appasaheb Pawar.
Together, they agreed on Falgun Vadya Tritiya as per the Hindu almanac and February 19 as per the English calendar. The DF government last year announced that Shiv Jayanti would be observed every year on February 19, which would be a state holiday. However, it also accepted Falgun Vadya Tritiya, thus contributing to confusion.
Stressing the Sena's case for Falgun Vadya Tritiya, Mr Bal Thackeray has said that Lokmanya Tilak had vouched for this date in a paper presented by him during the annual convention of the Bharat Itihas Sanshodhan Mandal in 1916."
When we checked Tritiya, Phalguna, Krishna Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1686 on Gregorian calendar it came out to be March 1, 1630, which is equivalent to February 19, 1630 on Julian calendar.
The other proposed date for the birth of Shivaji is April 6th, 1627, which is equivalent to April 16, 1627 on Gregorian calendar. This date when converted to Hindu date is very close to other proposed Tithi of Dwitiya, Vaishakha, Shukla Paksha, Vikram Samvat 1684.
However we consider the first date which has been proposed by the committee of eminent scholars. Drik Panchang converts February 19, 1630 from Julian calendar to Hindu lunar calendar (as per Amanta lunar calendar followed in Maharashtra) and marks Krishna Paksha Tritiya during Phalguna month as birth anniversary of Shivaji. The same Hindu date has been proposed by the eminent scholars of the committee.
