According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of Shravana month is celebrated as Damodara Dwadashi. This sacred day is also known as Balarama Dwadashi and Buddha Dwadashi. On this day, devotees observe a fast and worship Lord Vishnu with deep devotion to seek His divine grace. This Tithi is considered especially dear to Lord Shri Hari Vishnu. According to the scriptures, a person who observes fasting, charity and worship Lord Vishnu on this day becomes free from sins accumulated over countless lifetimes and ultimately attains Moksha.
As described in the Narada Purana, one should worship Lord Shridhara on Shravana Shukla Dwadashi. Among Lord Vishnu's many sacred names, Shridhar means the Lord of Shri, i.e., Goddess Lakshmi. Hence this day is also referred to as Shridhara Dwadashi.
Various scriptures further state that those who fast with devotion and worship Lord Vishnu on Shravana Shukla Dwadashi not only liberate themselves from sins but also grant salvation to their ancestors. Acts of charity performed on this day, especially the donation of food and water, yield infinite and imperishable merit.
According to the Narada Purana, devotees observing the fast on this day should bathe the deity, Lord Shridhara, with milk mixed with honey. Then, while reciting the Mantra Namostu Shridharaya। (नमोऽस्तु श्रीधराय।), worship the Lord with sandal paste (Gandha), flowers, incense, Dipa and other offerings in proper sequence. After the worship, perform a Havan by offering 108 oblations of Ghee mixed with curd.
At night, stay awake and keep a vigil while remembering and worshipping the Lord. After the vigil, offer one Adhaka, i.e., four Seers of milk to a Brahmin as a sacred donation. Next, according to one's capacity, present garments, Dakshina and two golden earrings to a Brahmin while reciting the following Mantra -
क्षीरब्धिशायिन् देवेश रमाकान्त जगत्पते।
क्षीरदानेन सुप्रीतो भव सर्वसुखप्रदः॥
Kshirabdhishayin Devesha Ramakanta Jagatpate।
Kshiradanena Suprito Bhava Sarvasukhapradah॥
Meaning - "O Lord of the Gods, who rests upon the Ocean of Milk! O beloved of Goddess Lakshmi, O Lord of the Universe! May You be pleased by this humble donation of milk and graciously bestow all happiness upon me."
According to the scriptures, performing Brahmin Bhoja brings all kinds of prosperity and joy. Therefore, the devotee should also offer food to Brahmins according to his means. By observing the Shravana Shukla Dwadashi Vrat as prescribed above, one attains the spiritual merit equivalent to performing 1000 Ashvamedha Yajnas.
