According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of the Kartika month is celebrated as Yogeshwara Dwadashi. On this day, devotees observe a Vrat and worship Lord Vishnu. Since Lord Vishnu is the Master of all Yogis, He is also known as Yoga-Yogeshwara or simply Yogeshwara. Hence, as this Dwadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in His Yogeshwara form, it is known as Yogeshwara Dwadashi. Yogeshwara Dwadashi is also known by various other names such as Vrindavana Dwadashi, Chikula Dwadashi, Kshirabdi Dwadashi and Garuda Dwadashi.
However, according to the Narada Purana, one should worship Lord Damodara on Kartika Shukla Dwadashi. Therefore, this Dwadashi is also referred to as Damodara Dwadashi. Among the many divine names of Lord Vishnu, Damodara is one of the most endearing. The term Dama means rope and Udara means stomach, hence Damodara literally means, the One whose belly was bound with a rope. This name is associated with famous Ukhala Bandhan Leela of Lord Krishna. The month of Kartika itself is known as Damodara Maas, which is another reason why this Dwadashi is called Damodara Dwadashi.
According to Narada Purana, on the auspicious occasion of Kartika Shukla Dwadashi, devotees should observe a fast and perform the Abhisheka of Lord Damodara using one Adhaka (approximately four Seers) each of milk, curd and Ghee. While performing the Abhisheka, chant the Mantra, Om Namo Damodaraya। (ॐ नमो दामोदराय।) and offer 108 oblations into the sacred fire using a mixture of honey, Ghee and sesame seeds.
After this, maintain discipline and restraint, worship Lord Shri Hari three times and perform Jagarana, i.e., vigil with devotion. In the morning, after completing daily rituals, worship the Lord again with beautiful lotus flowers. Then perform another Havana with 108 oblations using Ghee mixed with sesame seeds. After completing the Havana, donate food prepared from five types of grains to a Brahmin with devotion, while reciting the following Mantra -
दामोदर जगन्नाथ सर्वकारणकारण।
त्राहि मां कृपया देव शरणागतपालकः॥
Damodara Jagannatha Sarvakaranakarana।
Trahi Mam Kripaya Deva Sharanagatapalakah॥
Meaning - "O Lord Damodara, O Lord of the Universe, You are the cause of all causes. O compassionate Protector of those who surrender to You, please protect me."
After the offering, give charity and Dakshina to qualified Brahmins along with feeding them according to your capacity. Thereafter, partake of food along with your family members. By observing the Kartika Shukla Dwadashi Vrat with this procedure, a person attains the merit equivalent to performing 2000 Ashvamedha Yajnas.
