Margashirsha Festivals

Margashirsha is the 9th lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Kalabhairav Jayanti - Kalabhairava Jayanti is the birth anniversary of fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva associated with annihilation. Worshiping Lord Kalabhairava destroys fear and troubles and liberates one from demonic powers like ghosts and spirits.
  2. Utpanna Ekadashi - According to the Purnimanta Hindu calendar, Margashirsha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and according to the Amanta Hindu calendar, Kartika Krishna Paksha Ekadashi is known as Utpanna Ekadashi. Ekadashi fasting is started from Utpanna Ekadashi.
  3. Vivah Panchami - On Vivah Panchami day Lord Rama and Goddess Sita were married and this day is celebrated as marriage anniversary of Rama and Sita. On this occasion, the marriage of Shri Rama-Janaki is organized, and special worship is done.
  4. Gita Jayanti - According to the Hindu calendar, Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Margashirsha month is celebrated as Gita Jayanti. Gita Jayanti day symbolizes the emergence of Srimad Bhagavad-Gita, the sacred text of the Hindus. On this day, Lord Krishna gave wisdom of Gita to Arjuna.
  5. Mokshada Ekadashi - According to the Hindu calendar, Margashirsha Shukla Paksha Ekadashi is known as Mokshada Ekadashi. According to the description found in Hindu scriptures; by observing the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi with devotion, the mother, father and ancestors who have gone to hell attain salvation.
  6. Dattatreya Jayanti - Dattatreya Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Lord Dattatreya. Lord Dattatreya is the incarnation of the trinity of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha, collectively known as Trimurti. Lord Vishnu in the form of Dattatreya bestowed the knowledge of Guru-Shishya tradition upon humankind.
  7. Annapurna Jayanti - Annapurna Jayanti is observed annually on Purnima in the month of Margashirsha as per Hindu lunar calendar. Annapurna Jayanti is dedicated to Goddess Annapurna. In Hinduism, Goddess Annapurna is worshipped as the goddess of food, grains, nutrition, nutrients and food resources.
