This image depicts how Brahmins and Pandits used to study in Vedic time.

The most comfortable position was to sit on the floor. Small wooden platform, which is known as Choki, was used for study. The quill, natural ink and parchment were used in writing books and Panchangam. The quill was made of bird feathers. The ink was formed after combining soot with oil and with dyes extracted from flowers and plants.
