The 'Gajanana' Avatara of Vighna Vinashaka Lord Ganesha is considered the embodiment of Sankhya Brahma. It is believed to be a bestower of spiritual accomplishments for Sankhya Yogis. This form is also known as the vanquisher of the demon Lobhasura.
According to the story described in the Mudgala Purana, once the Lord of Wealth, Kubera, visited Mount Kailasha. There, he had the privilege of witnessing Lord Shiva and Goddess Shivaa. Seeing the captivating beauty of Goddess Shivaa, Kubera gazed at Her with a lustful look, which angered the Goddess. From the frightened Kubera emerged Lobhasura, a demon of immense strength and extraordinary prowess.
Lobhasura received initiation into the Panchakshara Mantra - Namaha Shivaya from the Daityaguru Shukracharya and proceeded to the forest for intense penance. For thousands of divine years, he meditated upon Lord Parvativallabha without consuming food, attaining great spiritual power. Lord Shiva granted him the boon of being fearless everywhere. Utilising this boon, Lobhasura gathered a demon army and brought the entire Earth under his control. Continuing his conquest, he attacked heaven, where even the Vajrayuddha Indra could not withstand him. Empowered by Shiva's boon, neither Lord Vishnu nor Tripurari Shiva could defeat him. Under Lobhasura's reign, righteous practices were destroyed and Brahmins and sages faced severe torment.
The distressed Gods and Sages sought the guidance of Sage Raimya to address the calamity. He inspired them to worship Lord Ganesha. After years of rigorous penance, the primordial deity Gajamukha appeared before the Gods, satisfied with their devotion, and promised to defeat Lobhasura. Lord Shiva, acting as Lord Gajanana's messenger, approached Lobhasura, praised Lord Gajanana's greatness, and warned him to either surrender to Lord Gajanana or prepare for battle. Following Shukracharya's advice, Lobhasura comprehended the 'Ganesha Tattva' and offered his veneration to Lord Ganesha. The compassionate Lord Gajanana comforted him, liberated both Earth and the Gods from his tyranny, and granted them freedom from fear.
According to the Amanta Hindu calendar, Krishna Paksha Chaturthi of Ashadha month, which is Shravana month in Purnimanta Calendar, is called Gajanana Sankashti. According to Hindu scriptures, Lord Ganesha incarnated in the form of Lord Gajanana to slay the demon Lobhasura.
