According to astrology, Budha is considered an important place in the Navagraha Mandala. The Adhidevta and Prtyadhidevta of Budha is Lord Vishnu. Budha is the lord of Wednesday in weekdays. Budha resides in Budha Mandala, situated One Lakh Yojana above Nakshatra Mandala. According to Shrimad Bhagwat, the planet Mercury is situated two lakh Yojanas above Venus. In Bhachakra, Gemini and Virgo are ruled by Budha. Mercury also influences all types of written words and all types of travel. The Arrow is the symbol of the planet Budha. Budha is considered the Lord and Protector of businesspeople.
According to scholars, to pacify the planet Mercury, one should fast on every new moon day and wear emerald gemstones as per astrological advice. According to the scriptures, donating emerald, coral, gold, ivory, scriptures, fruits, camphor, Ghee, green clothes and food with six types of taste to a Brahmin, as per one's capacity, brings peace to the planet Budha. Intelligence, communication, analysis, consciousness, science, mathematics, business, education and research etc. are considered influenced by Budha.
The Guru of the Chandra was Devaguru Brihaspati. Immoral relations were established between Chandra and Tara, the wife of Devaguru Brihaspati. A fierce war began between Devaguru Brihaspati and His disciple Chandra. In this war, Demon Guru Shukracharya ji took the side of Chandra. The remaining other gods were in favour of Brihaspati. After some time, the war turned into a fiercer battle. This war took place intending to attain Tara, hence it is described as Tarakamyam.
Seeing that there was no end to this fierce war, the creator Brahma got scared and started thinking that this war might cause the destruction of the entire creation. Brahma Ji started thinking of some strategy to end the war. He explained to Tara with his wisdom. Tara was again adopted by Jupiter. Thereafter Goddess Tara gave birth to a beautiful son. Due to the profound intelligence of that child, Lord Brahma named him Budha. Both Chandra and Guru started claiming their rights over that son. Both started declaring themselves the fathers of Budha, but Tara remained silent. Disturbed and angry due to his mother's silence, Budha asked his mother to tell him the truth. On repeated requests by Budha, Tara revealed Chandra as the real father of Budha.
Chandra is considered the father of Budha and Goddess Tara is his mother. According to the description found in Mahabharata, Maharaja Manu, impressed by the knowledge and wisdom of Budha, got his virtuous daughter Ila and Budha married. The son of Budha and Ila was Maharaja Pururava, who expanded the Chandravansha in future. However, some scholars show Budha riding on a chariot with eight dark yellow-colored Horses.
In religious scriptures, Budha has been described as yellow and green in complexion. He wears a beautiful garland of yellow flowers. Lord Budha is shown in Chaturbhuja form i.e. with four arms. His four arms are adorned with sword, shield, mace and Varamudra respectively. Lion is described as the mount of Budha. In another form of Mercury, he is depicted riding a chariot pulled by flying Lions holding a scepter and a lotus.
According to Matsya Purana, the complexion of planet Mercury is yellow like that of a Kaner flower, and he rides on a chariot resplendent with white light. The horses named Shweta, Pisanga, Saranga, Neela, Peeta, Vilohita, Krishna, Harita, Prusha and Prushni pull the divine chariot of Mercury with the speed of air.
According to Vedic Astrology, Budha i.e. Mercury has the title of crown Prince among the nine planets. Under the auspicious effects of Budha, a person becomes a skilled speaker, writer, philosopher, teacher, satirist, and gains proficiency in commerce and mathematics. Due to the blessings of Budha, the person is inclined towards telecommunication, tourism service, comedian's work or he becomes an expert in these arts. In astrology, Mercury is described as an auspicious planet. But due to the combination of any inauspicious planet in the horoscope, it can also prove to be harmful. If Budha is in an inauspicious position in the person's birthchart, he must face memory loss, confusion, irrationality and problems related to nervous system. The Maha Dasha of Budha lasts for 17 years.
Budha becomes the highest in Virgo and the lowest house in Pisces. Budha is friendly with Surya and Shukra, hostile with Chandra and generally beneficial towards other planets. In Vedic astrology, planet Mercury is considered the lord of three Nakshatra named Ashlesha, Jyestha and Revati. Brass, emerald gemstone and green color are very dear to Budha. Budha is related to the north direction, autumn and earth element.
