According to Hindu Scriptures, the torso of the demon named Swarabhanu is called Ketu. Ketu is considered a Chaya Graha i.e. shadow planet. Ketu harms the person's materialism to turn him on the path of spirituality. Ketu affects the entire creation and human life in various ways. Generally, Ketu is described as a planet giving both negative and positive results. Ketu is considered related to the Matsya incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Under the Navagraha Mandala, the black flag in the Vayavya Kona is the symbol of Ketu.

In astrology, Ketu represents the karmic collection of virtues and sins, spirituality and supernatural deeds. Ketu symbolizes the spiritual process by which material thoughts are purified. The Adhidevata of Ketu is Chitraketu and the Pratyadhidevata is Brahma. Ketu is the symbol of fire elements in the human body. The nature of Ketu is considered to be as cruel as that of Mangal. Ketu also represents many areas that are represented by Mangal.

Origin of Ketu

Once upon a time, Samudra Manthan was organized to obtain the Amrit i.e. nectar. In the churning of the ocean, the churning of Mandarachala Parvat, the rope of Vasuki Naga and Lord Vishnu himself in the form of Kurma situated at the root of the churning of Mandarachala. As soon as the nectar pot was obtained from the churning of the ocean, a dispute started between the deities and the demons. The demons started running away with the nectar urn, but at the same time Lord Vishnu appeared there in the form of Mohini and charmed the demons with Her sweet words and took the urn saying, "I will make you all drink this nectar equally with my own beautiful and soft hands."

Lord Vishnu tricked the deities into drinking nectar and the demons into drinking other substances. As soon as this was known, a demon named Swarbhanu disguised as a deity and sat in the row of deities. As soon as Lord Vishnu was going to make Swarbhanu drink the nectar, Surya and Chandra recognized Swarbhanu and informed Lord Vishnu. As soon as Lord Vishnu came to know that Swarbhanu was sitting in the form of a deity, Lord Vishnu immediately cut the throat of that demon with Sudarshan Chakra. But by that time some quantity of nectar had gone down his throat. The head of Swarbhanu was called Rahu and the lower band was called Ketu.

Both Rahu and Ketu were the same in the form of Swarabhanu. Swarbhanu was a demon but after his head was cut off by Lord Vishnu, he was considered to be reborn and being counted among the planets. Rahu and Ketu were given Paithinus and Jaimini Gotras respectively.

Ketu Family

Ketu's mother was Simhika and father Viprachitti. Simhika and Viprachitti had one hundred and one sons, of whom Rahu is the eldest. Apart from Rahu, all other brothers are called Ketu. According to Matsya Purana, there are many Ketu and Dhumaketu is prominent among them. Ketu's wife is Chitralekha.

Ketu Iconography

According to religious scriptures, Ketu has two arms, one arm is in Varada Mudra and the other arm is adorned with a Mace. The face of Ketu has been described as that of a snake and the waist has been described as that of a demon. In various other pictures related to Ketu, a gem or a star is shown in place of the head, from which mysterious light being emitted. Ketu is smoky in complexion and is shown wearing black clothes. Ketu is always depicted riding a Vulture.

Importance of Ketu in Astrology

It is said about Ketu that, when unfavorable, it causes pain and loss to the person, but when favourable, it can make a person like a Deity. People affected by Ketu reach the highest achievements in life. Ketu provides success mainly in the spiritual world. Ketu planet is considered the factor of intelligence, knowledge, renunciation, imagination, insight, etc. and other mental qualities. Ketu together with Rahu creates the situation of Kala Sarpa Yoga in the birthchart. Ketu is the lord of Ashwini, Magha and Moola Nakshatra. According to the position in the birthchart, Ketu sometimes bestows fame on the native. Ketu's Maha Dasha lasts for 7 years.

A group of astrological scholars consider Ketu as a neutral or impotent planet, but some other scholars describe Ketu as a male planet. According to beliefs, when Ketu is auspicious, it provides health, wealth and livestock wealth to the person. Ketu also destroys the effects of Snakebite or other types of Poison.

According to Numerology, the number 7 is ruled by the planet Ketu. People born on the 7th, 16th or 25th of every month have Root number 4. Rahu affects the lives of people born with Root number 4.
