Phalguna Festivals

Phalguna is the 12th lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Vijaya Ekadashi - According to Purnimanta Hindu calendar, Phalguna Krishna Ekadashi and according to Amanta Hindu calendar, Krishna Paksha Ekadashi of Magha month is known as Vijaya Ekadashi. By observing this fast, a person achieves victory in every front of life.
  2. Maha Shivaratri - Lord Shiva is worshipped on Maha Shivaratri day. It is believed that Lord Shiva was born as Linga at midnight on this day. Lord Shiva is worshipped in all the four Prahar of the night on Maha Shivaratri. Nishita Kaal Puja Time for Maha Shivaratri is given on this page.
  3. Phulera Dooj - According to the Hindu calendar, Shukla Paksha Dwitiya of Phalguna month is known as Phulera Dooj. The festival of Phulera Dooj is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Braj region, especially in Mathura-Vrindavan. This festival falls between Vasant Panchami and Holi.
  4. Amalaki Ekadashi - According to the Hindu calendar, Phalguna Shukla Ekadashi is observed as Amalaki Ekadashi. Amalaki Ekadashi falls between Maha Shivaratri and Holi. On this day, people worship Amla tree along with the worship of Lord Vishnu.
  5. Holika Dahan - Holika Dahan Muhurat is given with the time of Bhadra Punchha and Bhadra Mukha. On the eve of Holika Dahan huge bonfires are lit to commemorate the burning of the demoness Holika, the sister of demon Hiranyakashipu.
  6. Holi - Holi is one of the most popular festivals celebrated by Hindus with great joy every year. Holi is also known as the festival of colours. On this day people throw coloured powder and coloured water on each other.
