Maghi 2384

Maghi is celebrated one day before of famous Hindu festival Makara Sankranti and is observed on the same day as Lohri. Maghi is the Punjabi festival and mainly observed by Sikh community. It is traditional to eat sweet rice porridge with milk, which is known as Kheer, on the day of Maghi.

Sikhs visit the Gurdwara as the day of Maghi is observed to honour the heroic fight of the Chali Mukte, or the Forty Liberated Ones, who sacrificed their own lives defending an attack by the Mughal Empire army marching in pursuit of Guru Gobind Singh.

The event of Chali Mukte took place near a pool of water, Khidrane di Dhab, on December 29, 1705 as per Julian calendar. If we convert Julian date to Gregorian date, then the day of Chali Mukte was January 9, 1706 and it was the day of Lohri in year 1706. Hence Maghi is the day to commemorate the great sacrifice made by Chali Mukte on the day of Lohri in Punjab. On Maghi, a large gathering takes place in Muktsar known as Mela Maghi.
