In Hindu religion, the principle of karma and rebirth are considered responsible for the cycle of creation. That is why Shani Deva i.e. planet Saturn has been given a very important place. Because Shani Deva is the Lord of Karmas i.e. He gives results as per the Karmas of a person. Shani Deva rules Saturday among the weekdays. That is why in different areas, special worship of Shani Deva is done on Saturday.

Shani Deva resides in the Shani Mandala in the form of Shani Graha. Most of the people have a feeling of fear from Shani Deva but Shani is the God of justice. He gives results to every living being according to his various auspicious and inauspicious deeds. The fundamental work of Lord Shani is to provide appropriate results to living beings according to their deeds. For this reason, Shani Deva is also known as Dharamraja, Mandagami, Surya-Putra, Shanishchar, Chhayaputra and Dandadhikari etc.

Shani Deva is a great devotee of Lord Shiva. The Adhidevata of Shani is Prajapati Brahma, and the Prtyadhidevata is Yama.

Shani Origin

According to religious texts, Shani was born to Surya's wife Chaya. During the pregnancy period of Chaya Devi, she was continuously engrossed in the devotion of Lord Shiva. Goddess Chhaya did not even care about food and water in her devotion to Lord Shiva. According to beliefs, this is the reason that his irregular daily routine had an impact on the child growing in the womb, because of which Shani became dark complexioned. Due to Shani being of dark complexion, Lord Surya made a suspicious allegation on his wife Chhaya that Shani was not His son.

Since that time, Shani has feelings of hostility towards his father. Shani performed severe penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased with this, Lord Shiva asked for a boon from Shani, then Shani prayed, "Throughout the ages, my mother Chhaya has been insulted on many occasions by my father Surya. Therefore, it is the mother's wish that I May take revenge for my mother's insult and be more powerful than the Lord Surya." Hearing these words from Shani Deva, Lord Shiva gave a boon and said, "Shani will have the best place among the nine planets. Both humans and gods will be afraid of your name."

Shani Family

Shani Deva is the son of Lord Surya and his mother's name was Chhaya. Goddess Chhaya is also known as Samvarna. Shani Deva was married to Chitrarath's daughter Neeladevi, who is also known as Dhamini. Yamraja, Yamuna, Vaivasvata Manu, Savarni Manu, Karna, Sugriva, Revant, Bhadra, Bhaya, Nastya, Dasra, Revant and Tapti are the siblings of Lord Shani.

Shani Iconography

In religious texts, Shani Deva has been described as having a colour similar to the Neelamani i.e. sapphire. Shani is always dressed in blue clothes and gold jewellery. Generally, He is mounted on crow and vulture. Lord Shani is depicted in a Chaturbhuja i.e. four-armed forms, He holds a bow, arrow, trident and Varamudra in His four arms respectively. Description of various other vehicles of Shani Deva and His arrival on them is also available. Lord Shani is also mount on Elephant, Horse, Donkey, Lion, Jackal etc. Shani Deva's chariot is made of Iron.

Importance of Shani in Astrology

According to Vedic Astrology, the lord of Pushya, Anuradha and Uttarabhadrapada constellations is Lord Shani i.e. Saturn. Shani is considered the lord of Capricorn and Aquarius zodiac signs, and He transits in each zodiac sign for approximately 30 months (about 2 and a half years). Sapphire is the favorite gem of Shani. Shani's third, seventh and tenth visions are considered. Saturn is the enemy of the Surya, Chandra and Mangal and a friend of Budha and Shukra. Shani has a neutral attitude towards Guru. When Shani is in a negative position in the birthchart, it causes Vata Dosha disorders, tremors, bone and dental diseases. The Maha Dasha of Shani Deva lasts for 19 years.

According to Samudrika Shastra, the root of the middle finger is called Shani Parvata. The lines present on Shani Parvat are called Shani Rekha. Shani Rekha is also known as Bhagya Rekha. The results related to a person's luck and Karma are considered from the Shani Rekha.

According to Numerology, Shani Deva represents the number 8. If a person is born on 8, 17, 26 of any months then his Mulank, that is Birth Number will be 8 and lord will be Shani.
