Abhay Charanaravinda Bhaktivedanta Swami (1896-1977) was an Indian spiritual teacher and the founder-preceptor of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). He is commonly known as Shrila Prabhupada.
As per Hindu lunar calendar, Shrila Prabhupada was born on the day of Nandotsava (the next day of Krishna Janmashtami).
In 1922, he was requested to spread the message of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu in the English language by his spiritual master Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura.
Shrila Prabhupada's appearance day is celebrated as Vyasa Puja, an annual offering of special honor to the spiritual teacher.
In 1947, the Gaudiya Vaishnava Society recognised his scholarship with the title Bhaktivedanta
