Karnavedha Muhurat

Karnavedha

Karna Vedha is a Hindu Sanskara of ear piercing, in which ears of baby are pierced ritualistically during an auspicious time. Ear piercing not only facilitates wearing of ear ornaments but also prevents the child from intestine related diseases and problem of testicles swelling in case of baby-boy. Few people call it ear-boring instead of ear-piercing.

All time intervals are categorized into three

  • Auspicious Muhurat
Auspicious - very good to perform the activity.
  • Inauspicious - not good to perform the activity.
  • Mixed Muhurat
Mixed - good intervals but has some dosha due to which it should be used with cautious in case of urgency.

Karna Vedha should be done either on 10th, 12th or 16th day after birth. If not done early in days then it should be done during 6th, 7th, or 8th month. After one year it should be done in odd years e.g. 3rd year, 5th year, etc. from child birth. In modern times, Karna Vedha is generally done during Mundana Sanskara or Upanayana Sanskara.

Following considerations are necessary while choosing an appropriate Muhurta for ear-piercing.

Solar Months: Except Khara Masa i.e. when Surya transits through Dhanu and Meena Rashi, all solar months are considered good for Karna Vedha rituals.

Lunar Months: Except duration of Chaturmasa which is also known as Hari Shayana all lunar months are considered good for Karna Vedha.

Nakshatra: All gentle and friendly Nakshatra i.e. Mrigashira (5), Chitra (14), Anuradha (17), Revati (27), all short Nakshatra i.e Ashwini (1), Pushya (8), Hasta (13), movable Nakshatra i.e. Punarvasu (7), Shravana (22), Dhanishtha (23) are considered auspicious for Karna Vedha. Abhijit Nakshatra is also considered good.

Tithi: Except Rikta Tithi i.e. Chaturthi (4), Navami (9) and Chaturdashi (14) of Shukla and Krishna Paksha both and new moon day i.e. Amavasya Tithi, all Tithi are considered good for Karna Vedha.

Days: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered good for Karna Vedha.

Lagna: For Karna Vedha lord of Lagna Rashi should be either Brihaspati or Shukra. In other words, Lagna of Vrishabha (2), Tula (7), Dhanu (9) and Meena (12) are preferred for Karna Vedha.

Kundali: Karna Vedha Lagna should have benefic(s) in Kendra, Trikona, 3rd House and 11th House. While malefic(s) should be in 3rd House, 6th House and 11th House. 8th House should be vacant. Brihaspati in Lagna is considered very good.

Chandra and Tara Shuddhi: Proper Chandra and Tara Shuddhi for child should be performed.

Prohitbited: Janma Masa i.e. month of birth and birth Nakshatra should also be discarded while choosing appropriate time for Karna Vedha. Karna Vedha Sanskara should be done before Aparahna, in other words it should be done before mid-day during day time only.

For baby boy Karna Vedha should begin with right ear and then left ear. For baby girl it should begin with left ear first and then right ear.
