In Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Sankranti is celebrated for four days. The day after Makara Sankranti is celebrated as Kanuma. The origin of Kanuma in Andhra Pradesh is same as that of Govardhan Puja in other states. It is believed that Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hills on the auspicious day of Kanuma to protect the people of Gokulam.
The rituals of Kanuma Panduga are similar to that of Mattu Pongal in Tamil Nadu. The bulls and cows are decorated and worshipped on Kanuma as the day of Kanuma is dedicated for live-stock worship.
