Navgraha Rahu

Navgraha Rahu

In Hinduism, Rahu is described as a negative and troublesome planet. Rahu eclipses the Sun and the Moon. Although it is not a planet but in a way a shadow. Still, it is given great importance due to its significant impact. According to the description found in Bhishma Parva of Mahabharata, the planet Rahu is circular in shape and along with other planets, Rahu is also present in the assembly of Lord Brahma. The black flag in the northwest corner of the Navagraha Mandala symbolizes Rahu. The Adhidevata of Rahu is Kaal, and the Pratyadhidevata is Lord Surya.

According to Rigveda, at the time when Simhika's son Rahu merges the Sun and the Moon in his darkness, "it becomes so dark that it becomes impossible for living beings to even recognize their place." Rahu is considered the cause of diseases, obstacles and accidents. According to Matsya Purana, Rahu is the presiding deity of Chaya.

Rahu Origin

When the nectar appeared during the Samudra Manthan i.e. churning of the ocean, when Lord Shri Hari Vishnu was making the gods drink the nectar in the form of Mohini, at that time a demon named Swarabhanu came to know the truth of Lord Vishnu and in the line of gods took the form of a deity from Maya. After disguising himself as a deity, he started drinking nectar. At the time when Lord Vishnu was about to give nectar to Swarabhanu, Surya and Chandra recognized Swarabhanu and informed Lord Vishnu who was in the form of Mohini.

Lord Vishnu immediately cut off Swarbhanu's head using his Sudarshana Chakra. But by that time the nectar had gone down Swarbhanu's throat, due to which both his head and torso got separated and transformed into two different demons. The severed head of Swarabhanu became Rahu and the torso was named Ketu. Due to being recognized by Surya and Chandra Deva, Rahu and Ketu consider them as enemies and try to eat Surya and Chandra.

From the astronomical point of view, this eclipse is visible to us as a solar eclipse on Earth due to the Moon's movement in the same direction as the Sun and the Earth. Similarly, when the Earth's shadow starts falling on the Moon, a lunar eclipse occurs. Solar eclipse always occurs on Amavasya and lunar eclipse always occurs on Purnima.

Rahu's mother's name is Simhika and she is also known as Asuya. Simhika was the daughter of Hiranyakashyapu. Rahu's father's name is Viprachitti. According to Srimada Bhagwat, Rahu also had a hundred other brothers, out of them Rahu is the eldest. Rahu was married to a girl named Karali.

Importance of Rahu in Astrology

Rahu has a significant place in Vedic Astrology. The duration of Rahukala during the day is equal to the eighth part of the day scale (usually about one and a half hours) which is considered inauspicious for all kinds of auspicious works. In the religious scriptures, Rahu has been described as a symbol of unrighteousness, impurity, deceit, adultery, exile, wealth in foreign lands, drugs, poison sellers, immoral acts and false speakers etc. Due to the inauspicious effects of Rahu, one must face problems related to stomach ulcers, bones and migration. But if Rahu is favourable in the birth chart, it increases power and creates friendship with enemies. Maha Dasha of Rahu lasts for 18 years.

According to Samudrika Shastra, Rahu Parvat is situated exactly in the middle of the palm, at the origin of the Mastishka Rekha. The lines marked on Rahu Parvat are called Rahu Rekha. By observing Rahu Parvat, the person's religious tendencies, behaviour and wealth etc. are considered.

According to Numerology, number 4 is ruled by the planet Rahu. People born on the 4, 13 or 22 of every month have a Mulank or Birth Number of 4. Rahu affects the lives of people associated with number 4.
