Shukra is also known as the name of Daityaguru Shukracharya. The literal meaning of Shukra in Sanskrit is pure and clean. Shukra is the lord of Friday among the weekdays. Due to being the Guru of demons, Shukracharya is also called Asuracharya. In Bhachakra, Shukra is the lord of Taurus and Libra. In Navagraha Mandala, the white pentagon in the east is the symbol of Venus. Shukra is also considered the lord of Jyeshtha month. White colour, silver metal and diamond etc. are the favorite things of Shukra.

The direction of Shukra is south-east, the season is spring, and the element is water. Guru Shukracharya resides in Shukra Mandal. Shukra is the lord of Friday among weekdays. The sixth day of the week is called Shukravara in many Indian languages including Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Odia, Bengali, Assamese and Kannada. The Adhidevata of Shukra is Indrani, and the Pratyadhidevata is Indra.

Shukra Origin

Shukra Deva was born on Shravan Shukla Ashtami in the year named Parthiva when Swati Nakshatra rose. According to legends, there was a Vedic sage named Ushanas. His family surname was Kavya meaning descendant of the poet. Later, he was described as Ushanas Shukra. Shukra went for education and study of Vedas under sage Angiras, he was unhappy with sage because Angiras favoured his son Brihaspati. After this, Shukra took education from Rishi Gautam.

Lord Vishnu had killed Shukracharya's mother for providing shelter to demons. Due to the killing of his mother, Shukracharya became disgusted with Lord Vishnu. Therefore, he decided to become the Guru of the demons and started guiding the demons. Thereafter, Shukracharya performed severe penance of Lord Shiva and received the boon of Sanjivani Vidya. Using the knowledge of Sanjivani received from Lord Shiva, Shukracharya used to revive and heal the demons injured and dead in the war. Ultimately, with the help of Daitya Guru Shukracharya, the demons won the war.

Shukra Family

According to Srimaddevi Bhagwat, The mother of Daitya Guru Shukracharya was Kavyamata and his father was Bhrigu Rishi. Shukracharya was married to Priyavrat's daughter Urjaswati, from whom he had four sons named Chanda, Amark, Tvastra, Dharatra and a daughter named Devayani. Shukra had another wife, whose name was Jayanti.

Shukra Iconography

Shukra sits on a seat of white lotus flower in a four-armed form with white complexion. His four arms are adorned with a stick, Rudraksh garland, vessel and Varamudra respectively. Shukracharya is shown in various forms riding on a Camel, Horse and Crocodile.

Importance of Shukra in Astrology

In Vedic Astrology, Shukra i.e. Venus has been described as a planet with auspicious, fruitful and feminine qualities. According to religious texts, Venus eliminates the effects of anti-rainfall planets and creates rain-causing conditions. In Vedic astrology, Venus has been described as related to life partner, love, marriage, luxury, prosperity, happiness, vehicles, art, dance, music, acting, enthusiasm and work etc. Maha Dasha of Venus lasts for 20 years.

When Venus is in a good position in the birthchart, one gets control over the senses and also recieves name and fame. But if Shukra is in a negative position, then the person may face skin, eye, appetite and sexual problems.

According to Samudrika Shastra, the raised spot at the base of the thumb in the palm is called the Shukra Parvat. The lines marked on Shukra Parvat are called Shukra Rekha. In Samudrika Shastra, by observing Mount Venus, love, attraction, beauty and sexual relations are considered.

According to Numerology, the planet Venus is considered the lord of number 6. The Mulanka of those born on the 6, 15, 24 of any months will be 6. Those who have Mulanka 6 are influenced by the Shukra.

Samanya mantra-

ॐ द्रां द्रीं द्रौं सः शुक्राय नमः।

Om Draan Draan Draaun Sah Shukray Namah।

Shukra Gayatri Mantra-

ॐ भृगुपुत्राय विद्महे, विन्देशाय धीमहि, तन्नः शुक्रः प्रचोदयात्॥

Om Bhriguputraya Vidmahe, Vindeshay Dhimahi, Tannah Shukrah Prachodayat॥

Shukra Festival

  • Diwali - On the night of Diwali, Swati Nakshatra falls, whose lord is Rahu. Venus is pleased by donating lamps on this festive night.
