Mahalaya Shraddha for those who died on Purnima Tithi is done on Amavasya Shraddha Tithi and not on Bhadrapada Purnima. Although Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha falls one day before Pitru Paksha, it is not part of Pitru Paksha. Usually, Pitru Paksha starts on the next day of Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha.
Bhadrapada Purnima Shraddha, like Pitru Paksha Shraddha, is Parvan Shraddha (पार्वण श्राद्ध) and auspicious time to perform it is either Kutup Muhurat and Rohina etc. Muhurat after that till Aparahna Kala gets over. Tarpan (तर्पण) is done at the end of the Shraddha.
According to Hemadri and the Markandeya Purana, on the Purnima Tithi of the Bhadrapada month, one should perform Shraddha for three ancestors beyond the great-grandfather. When the Lord Surya is positioned in the Kanya Rashi, the Shraddha of Nandimukha Pitar should be performed annually on this Purnima.
As per the Brahma Purana, the father, grandfather and great-grandfather are referred to as Ashvamukha Pitar, while the three ancestors before them, who were prosperous and had progeny, are called Nandimukha Pitar. On this day, Shraddha for maternal ancestors, i.e., maternal grandfather and others should also be performed. In Nirnaya Deepa, Sage Gargacharya has stated - "Except for the Purnima of the Bhadrapada month, Pinda Daan is prohibited on all other Purnima days, because this Purnima is considered equivalent to Amavasya."
Purnima Shraddha is also known as Shraddhi Purnima and Proshthapadi Purnima Shraddha (प्रोष्ठपदी पूर्णिमा).
