2017 Panchami Shraddha

Panchami Shraddha is done for those deceased family members who died on Panchami Tithi, including both Shukla and Krishna Paksha Panchami.

Panchami Shraddha Tithi is also known as Kunwara Panchami. Doing Shraddha on this Tithi is significant for those deceased family members who died unmarried.

Pitru Paksha Shraddhas are Parvan Shraddhas (पार्वण श्राद्ध) and auspicious time to perform them is either Kutup Muhurat and Rohina etc. Muhurat after that till Aparahna Kala gets over. Tarpan (तर्पण) is done at the end of the Shraddha.

According to Garuda Purana, the lifespan of human beings in the Kaliyuga has been ordained as one hundred years. However, in present times, most people die before reaching the age of 100. Likewise, there are individuals who pass away before entering the bond of marriage. Hence, as per established beliefs, Shraddha rites must be performed for the peace of soul of unmarried deceased individuals. For this reason, the Panchami that falls during Pitru Paksha is known as Kuwara Panchami.

If the Shraddha of unmarried deceased family members is not performed, it may lead to issues such as domestic discord, unrest, illness, defamation, untimely death, obstacles in marriage and infertility. These problems are considered signs of Pitru Dosha. If an unmarried Son or Daughter has passed away, then any male relative from the paternal side, such as a brother, nephew, grandson or great-grandson can perform their Shraddha rites. On this day, reciting the 5th chapter of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita is considered especially meritorious.
