According to the Hindu Panchang, Goga Navami is celebrated on the day following Krishna Janmashtami. Thus, in the Purnimanta Panchang, it falls on the Krishna Paksha Navami Tithi of the Bhadrapada month, while in the Amanta Panchang, it occurs during the Krishna Paksha of the Shravana month. This festival is dedicated to Shri Goga Ji Maharaj, a highly revered folk deity. Devotees also know Him by various names such as Veer Gogaji, Gugga Veer, Jahar Veer, Raja Mandalik and Jahar Pir. His mother's name was Shri Bachhal Devi.
Goga Navami is primarily celebrated in the Indian states of Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh. In these regions, Goga Ji is widely worshipped as the deity of serpents. According to another belief, Veer Gogaji was one of the principal disciples of Guru Gorakshanath. Shri Gogaji Maharaj is regarded as the embodiment of valor, courage, righteousness and noble ideals of life.
In the Hanumangarh district of Rajasthan, within the Nohar subdivision, lies the sacred shrine of Goga Ji at Gogamedi Temple, where His divine Samadhi is located. A grand fair, known as the Gogamedi Mela, is held here every year from Shravana Shukla Purnima to Bhadrapada Shukla Purnima. Devotees from both Hindu and Muslim communities visit this holy site in large numbers to seek the blessings of Veer Gogaji.
In the villages of Rajasthan and the adjoining states, shrines known as Goga Ji Ki Than can be found beneath most Khejri trees. Hence, a popular saying in Rajasthan goes – "Gaon Gaon Goga Nai, Gaon Gaon Khejri", meaning, in every village there is Veer Goga Ji and in every village there is a Khejri tree." This reflects the widespread devotion and reverence for Veer Goga Ji across the region.
It is believed that Veer Gogaji is especially fond of Kheer, i.e., sweet rice pudding and Churma which is a traditional sweet made of wheat flour, Ghee and sugar. Therefore, on the day of Goga Navami, devotees offer these delicacies to the deity with deep devotion and faith.
