The first day of Chingam month in Malayalam calendar is observed as Malayalam New Year. However, many people in Kerala celebrate Vishu Kani as the first day of the year which is observed on the 1st day of Medam month.
On the occasion of the Malayalam New Year, people take a bath early in the morning, wear new clothes and visit temples. At home, worshipping, lighting of lamps, and preparation of special offerings are performed. Some people also conduct special prayers to the Navagraha and Surya Narayana on this day. Families exchange good wishes, seek blessings from elders and prepare a variety of traditional dishes. Schools, offices, and public institutions also organize special programs to mark the day.
The month of Chingam symbolizes the end of the monsoon season and the beginning of autumn. This month holds great importance for farmers, as it marks the start of the new agricultural cycle. The environment during Chingam becomes clear, cool and lush green, making the experience of the New Year even more joyful.
