1399 Adhika Purnima

According to the Hindu calendar, the Purnima of Adhik Maas occurs once every two and a half years. Adhik Maas is also known as Mal Maas or Purushottam Maas. Because this full moon falls in Adhik Maas, it is popularly known as Adhik Purnima. In Hinduism, Adhik Maas is considered a very sacred and important month. Therefore, the full moon that occurs during this month is regarded as special and different from a regular Purnima. According to scriptures like the Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Narada Purana, and Bhavishya Purana, the Purnima of Adhik Maas is described as Sarva-Siddhi-Dayini Purnima which means the Purnima that grants all achievements.

As per the Shri Vishnu Sahasranama, Purushottam is one of names of Lord Vishnu, which means the best among men. Since this month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, it is also called Purushottam Maas. Worshipping Lord Vishnu on the Purnima of Adhik Maas is believed to destroy all sins and grant liberation. It is considered a golden opportunity to receive the blessings of Lord Vishnu. On this day, many places hold Bhajana-Kirtana, Satsanga, and other religious ceremonies.

According to various scriptures, performing charity, chanting, fasting, and listening to religious stories on the Purnima of Adhik Maas yields the same merit as performing a hundred yajnas. On this auspicious occasion, one should take a ritual bath and offer charity at the sacred banks of rivers like the Ganga, Yamuna, and Narmada, as per their capacity.

Fasting on the Purnima of Adhik Maas gives many times more results than other fasts. Devotees observe a full day fast, either without water or with fruits, and worship Lord Vishnu. In the evening, they offer Arghya to the Lord Chandra and then break their fast. Followers of the Shaiva Sampradaya worship Lord Shiva on this day.

As this month is dear to Lord Vishnu, rituals, Havan, and other religious ceremonies related to Him are performed during Purushottam Maas. It is also considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Satyanarayana, who is one of the forms of Lord Vishnu. Reciting and listening to the Satyanarayana Katha on the Purnima of Purushottam Maas is believed to destroy all sins. This fast is considered very effective for family peace, prosperity, and fulfilment of desires.

The Purnima of Adhik Maas is also considered very fruitful for giving donations. According to the scriptures, charity is the greatest virtue in the Kali Yuga. Donations made on this day earn great merit. Donating food, clothes, gold, cows, etc., as per one's ability, helps fulfil all wishes.
