-3049 Ashwina Purnima

All Purnima Tithis are considered auspicious among Hindus. Ashwina Purnima is the seventh Purnima in the year according to Hindu lunar calendar which falls in the Sharada Ritu and it comes after Pitru Paksha and Sharada Navratri. According to Skanda Purana, on this day, the Lord Chandra shines with all His sixteen Kala(s). Therefore, on this day, Kheer made of milk and rice is kept in the rays of the moon till night, so that medicinal properties get absorbed in it. Thereafter, Kheer is consumed as Prasada.

Many religious and cultural festivals are celebrated on the day of Ashwina Purnima. According to Padma Purana, a festival called Kojagara Lakshmi Puja is celebrated on Ashwina Shukla Nishithavyapini Purnima to please Goddess Lakshmi. Due to which it is also called Kojagari Purnima. Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped by staying awake at night on Kojagari Purnima. According to beliefs, Goddess Lakshmi provides wealth and happiness to those who stay awake at night on this day.

Valmiki Jayanti is also celebrated on this day as the birth anniversary of Maharishi Valmiki. Being the author of a great book like Ramayana, Maharishi Valmiki is also known as Adi Kavi. Apart from this, Ashwina Purnima is also known as Mirabai Jayanti. Mirabai was an ardent and popular devotee of Lord Krishna.

Satyanarayana Vrat and Katha are observed on the day of Ashwina Purnima. On this occasion, devotees worship Lord Satyanarayana, an extremely benevolent form of Lord Vishnu and pray for happiness, peace and prosperity. Many communities observe one day fast on Purnima Tithi according to their Kula Parampara. Kula Paramparas are family traditions passed from generation to generation.

According to Shrimad Bhagwat Mahapurana, Lord Krishna performed Maharasa with Goddess Radharani and the Gopis of Braj region on Ashwina Shukla Purnima. Hence, it is also known as Rasa Purnima. Ashwin Purnima is also known as Sharada Purnima.
