In the twelfth chapter of Narada Pancharatna, Lord Shiva has been described as Chandal and Goddess Shiva has been described as Uchchishta Chandali. Another name of Goddess Uchchishta Chandali is Goddess Matangi. In ancient times there was a sage named Matanga. He was full of knowledge of various types of Vedas. Once upon a time, sage Matanga had performed severe penance for hundreds of thousands of years to Goddess Tripura in the dense Kadamba Forest full of innumerable trees with the aim of subduing all the living beings under his control. Due to the effect of the sage's penance, a beam of light emerged from the eyes of Goddess Tripura Sundari. The light emanating from the eyes of Mother Goddess transformed into a goddess of dark complexion. The same goddess became famous all over the world as Rajmatangini. In Brahmayamal Tantra, Goddess Matangi is described as the daughter of sage Matang.
