Sant Kabirdas Jayanti 2022

Sant Kabirdas (1440-1518 circa) was a famous poet, saint and social reformer of India. His writings have greatly influenced the Bhakti movement. Sant Kabirdas was born in Varanasi. Scholars hold differing opinions regarding the birth year of Kabir Ji. According to another widely accepted view, He was born in Vikrama Samvata 1455, corresponding to 1398 CE. The birth anniversary of Sant Kabir is observed on Jyeshtha Purnima as per Hindu lunar calendar.

Various legends are also associated with the identity of Kabir Ji's parents. It is believed that Kabir Ji was found on a lotus flower in the Lahartara pond, after which He was raised by a couple named Neeru and Neema.

Kabir Panth which is a religious community recognizes him as its founder and its members are known as Kabir Panthis, the followers of Saint Kabirdas. Followers of the Kabir Panth adhere to the teachings conveyed by Saint Kabirdas through his Dohas and actively promote and spread them among the people.

Kabirdas Ji was one of the greatest poets associated with the Jnanamargi sub-branch of the Nirguna tradition of the Bhaktikala in Hindi literature. His writings include Bijak, Sakhi Granth, Kabir Granthavali and Anurag Sagar. The major part of Kabir's work was collected by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev, and incorporated into the Sikh scripture Guru Granth Sahib. The hallmark of Kabir's work consists of his two line couplets, known as Kabir Ke Dohe. The Shri Guru Granth Sahib contains 226 Dohas of Sant Kabirdas.

According to traditional beliefs, Sant Kabirdas passed away in Vikram Samvat 1575, corresponding to 1518 CE, on the Ekadashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Magha, at Maghar in present-day Uttar Pradesh. It is said that in earlier times there was a belief that a person who died in Maghar would be destined for hell. Therefore, Kabirdas Ji went to Maghar during the final period of his life. In Maghar, he left this material world and merged into the eternal void.
