Saptami Shraddha is done for those deceased family members who died on Saptami Tithi, including both Shukla and Krishna Paksha Saptami.
Pitru Paksha Shraddhas are Parvan Shraddhas (पार्वण श्राद्ध) and auspicious time to perform them is either Kutup Muhurat and Rohina etc. Muhurat after that till Aparahna Kala gets over. Tarpan (तर्पण) is done at the end of the Shraddha.
Saptami Shraddha is a Tithi-based Shraddha performed on the seventh day of the Pitru Paksha. In Hinduism, Shraddha is considered a highly significant duty, the primary objective of which is to offer satisfaction, peace and liberation to the souls of ancestors. According to various scriptures, performing Shraddha on the exact Tithi, i.e., lunar date of the ancestor's death is considered most auspicious. If an ancestor passed away on the Saptami Tithi of either the Shukla or Krishna Paksha, then their Shraddha should be performed on the corresponding Saptami Tithi during Pitru Paksha, as prescribed by the scriptures and regarded as highly meritorious.
Garuda Purana, Manu Smriti, Yajnavalkya Smriti, Vishnu Dharmasutra and Dharmasindhu clearly outline the tradition of performing Shraddha based on Tithi. These scriptures state that if Shraddha, Tarpan and Pinda Daan are performed on the correct date with proper rites, the concerned ancestor is truly appeased by the ritual and blesses their descendants. A Shraddha performed on the proper Tithi effectively reaches the intended ancestor, whereas one performed on an incorrect date is considered incomplete.
If the exact death Tithi of an ancestor is unknown, then, as per the scriptures, one may perform a collective Shraddha on Sarva Pitru Amavasya to honor all ancestors collectively which also includes those who passed away on Saptami Tithi. However, if the Tithi is known to be Saptami, then performing the Shraddha on this specific day brings exceptional spiritual merit. The main rituals of Saptami Shraddha include Pinda dana, Tarpan, Brahmin Bhoj, donations and recitation of the Bhagavad Gita which are performed with devotion and please the ancestors. Saptami Shraddha is a powerful means of releasing oneself from Pitru Rina. It is seen as essential for upholding family tradition, receiving the blessings of ancestors and ensuring domestic peace and prosperity.
