Parashurama Jayanti is celebrated as birth anniversary of sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It falls during Shukla Paksha Tritiya in the month of Vaishakha. It is believed that Parashurama was born during Pradosh Kala and hence the day when Tritiya prevails during Pradosh Kala is considered for Parashurama Jayanti celebrations. The purpose of the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu is to relieve the Earth's burden by exterminating the sinful, destructive and irreligious monarchs that pillaged its resources and neglected their duties as kings.
According to Hindu belief unlike all other avatars Parashurama still lives on the Earth. Therefore, unlike Rama and Krishna, Parashurama is not worshipped. In South India, at the holy place Pajaka near Udupi, one major temple exists which commemorates Parashurama. There are many temples at the western coast of India which are dedicated to Lord Parashurama.
The Kalki Purana states that Parashurama will be the martial Guru of Shri Kalki, the 10th and final Avatar of Lord Vishnu. It is not the first time that 6th Avatar of Lord Vishnu will meet another Avatar. According to Ramayana, Parashurama came to the betrothal ceremony of Sita and Lord Rama and met the 7th Avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Parashurama was born during the first Prahara of the night on the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of the Vaishakha month. Therefore, on the day of Parashurama Jayanti, the Pradosha Vyapini Tithi should be observed. If the Pradosha Vyapini Tithi falls on two days, then the Vrat should be observed on the second day. On the day of the Vrat, after taking a bath in the morning, one should take the following Sankalpa -
मम ब्रह्मत्वप्राप्तिकामनया परशुरामपूजनमहं करिष्ये।
Mama Brahmatvapraptikamanaya Parashuramapujanamaham Karishye।
Meaning - "For the attainment of Brahmatva, I shall perform the Puja and Vrat of Lord Parashurama."
After taking the above Sankalpa, the observer should maintain Mauna, i.e., silence until sunset. Thereafter, in the evening, one should again take a bath and perform the Puja of Lord Parashurama.
After completing the Puja, while reciting the following Mantra, one should offer Arghya to Lord Parashurama -
जमदग्निसुतो वीर क्षत्रियान्तकर प्रभो।
गृहाणार्घ्यं मया दत्तं कृपया परमेश्वर॥
Jamadagnisuto Vira Kshatriyantakara Prabho।
Grihanarghyam Maya Dattam Kripaya Parameshvara॥
Meaning - "O son of Jamadagni! O brave one! O Lord who is the destroyer of Kshatriyas! O Supreme Lord! Kindly accept this Arghya offered by me."
After offering Arghya with the above Mantra, one should perform Japa of the "Shri Rama" Naam Mantra throughout the night. By observing the Vrat and performing the Puja of Parashurama Jayanti in this manner, Lord Parashurama becomes pleased and grants Brahmatva and spiritual upliftment to the devotee.
