Dhumavati Jayanti 2018

According to Hindu calendar, Goddess Dhumavati Jayanti is celebrated on Jyeshtha Shukla Ashtami Tithi. Goddess Dhumavati is the seventh among the ten Mahavidya goddesses and is associated with Shri Kula. Goddess Dhumavati destroys all obstacles and troubles. Goddess Dhumavati is the Shakti of Dhumeshwar Rudra of Lord Shiva. According to beliefs, by worshipping Goddess Dhumavati properly, a poor person gets happiness and wealth. Mother Goddess, with Her grace, destroys all types of harmful diseases. Goddess Dhumavati influences the planet Ketu. Therefore, Mata Dhumavati is also worshipped to mitigate the obstacles caused by Ketu. Goddess Dhumavati is related to the Vamana incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Among ten Mahavidya, Goddess Dhumavati is worshiped as Darun Vidya.

Goddess Dhumavati is worshipped for the purpose of exaltation and killing etc. She is the eldest sister of Goddess Lakshmi. Generally, due to the form and attire of Goddess Dhumavati, She is considered to be associated with inauspiciousness and negativity, but the Goddess destroys diseases and calamities from the lives of Her devotees and grants victory in war. According to Narada Pancharatra, Goddess Dhumavati had manifested Goddess Ugrachandika from Her body, who produces sounds like hundreds of jackals. According to Swatantra Tantra, Goddess Sati, hurt by the insult of Lord Shiva by Daksha Prajapati, immolated Herself in the fire of Yajna. After Goddess Sati got immersed in the fire of Yoga, Goddess Dhumavati appeared from the smoke emanating from the Yajna.

According to Durga Saptashati, Goddess Dhumavati had promised that She would marry the one who would defeat Her in the war, but no one was successful in doing so. Hence Goddess Dhumavati is Kumari.

Devi Dhumavati Jayanti Katha

Once upon a time Goddess Parvati was visiting Mount Kailasha with Lord Shiva. At the same time, She felt intense hunger and requested Lord Shiva to provide food to satisfy Her hunger. Lord Shiva asked Her to wait for few moments. Time was passing and the goddess was becoming distressed due to hunger. When there was no provision for food despite repeated requests, Goddess Parvati swallowed Lord Shiva to quench her hunger. Due to the effect of the poison present in Lord Shiva's throat while swallowing Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati's body became smoky, and Her form got distorted. After that, Lord Shiva says to Mother Goddess through His Maya that, "Because your entire body is full of smoke, you will be famous as Dhumavati. The moment you ate me, you became a widow. Therefore, you will be known in this form and will be worshipped in the whole universe."
