Kali Jayanti 2025

According to Hindu calendar, Kali Jayanti is celebrated on Shravana month (Purnimanta Bhadrapada month) Krishna Paksha Ashtami. Among the ten Mahavidya, Goddess Kali is the first Mahavidya and belongs to the Kali Kula. According to Devi Bhagwat Purana, the various gentle and fierce forms of Goddess Mahakali are revered as the ten Mahavidya. Goddess Mahakali is the power of Mahakala form of Lord Shiva. According to the description found in Brahmanila Tantra, Goddess Kali exists in two forms, blood color and black color. The name of black colored Kali is Dakshina, and the name of red colored Kali is Sundari. Due to the complexion of the goddess being black like Kajal, she became famous in the world by the name of Kali.

Devi Kali Jayanti Katha

Once upon a time, Yogeshwara Lord Shiva performed hard penance to please Mahadevi and received the boon of becoming His wife from Her. Lord Brahma felt that soon Mahadevi herself would appear as per the boon. Therefore, He ordered one of his favorite sons, Daksha Prajapati, to engage in penance so that Daksha can get Mahadevi as his daughter and later could marry Her with Lord Shiva.

As per the orders of his father Brahma Ji, Daksha performed rigorous penance for Mahadevi, as a result of which the Goddess herself appeared in front of him and asked him to ask for the desired boon. Daksha said, "O Mother! It is my wish that you take birth as my daughter." Mahadevi, while granting a boon to Daksha, She said, "Whenever I incarnate to marry Lord Shiva, I will be born from the womb of your wife Prasuti but the Goddess also reminded him and said that, if Daksh's virtues diminish or he neglects or insults Mahadevi in any way, She will immediately abandon him.

Later, Daksha Prajapati organized a Yajna to which Lord Shiva was not invited. When Lord Shiva saw that Sati was adamant about participating in Her father's Yajna despite Her father's disapproval, Shiva became angry and roared and said, "I know that you are not bound by my orders, so do whatever you want, why are you waiting for my consent?

Hearing such harsh words from Lord Shiva, the Goddess became angry and started thinking in Her mind, "After accepting me as his wife, Lord Shiva has forgotten my real supreme power form. Therefore, forsaking Shiva and my proud father, I will remain situated in my form and my pastimes for some time."

Having decided this, the Goddess assumed the fearsome form of Mahakali who was a dark-complexioned goddess, Digambari (whose clothes were in directions), Lolajihva (whose tongue was hanging out and was pressed between the teeth), had messy hair and was wearing a Mundamala.

Seeing the Goddess in this fierce form, Lord Shiva became frightened and immediately tried to run away from that place. Seeing Her beloved Lord Shiva frightened, Mother Goddess graciously took ten different forms to prevent Lord Shiva from running away in any direction and to block all ten directions. Each form of Goddess Bhagwati blocked every direction.

Whichever direction Lord Shiva tried to run from, the Goddess was present in a fierce form in that direction. Finally, finding no way out, Lord Shiva closed His eyes in fear and the moment he opened them, Goddess Mahakali was standing in front of Him in Her monstrous form. Lord Shiva asked, "Who are you, Shyama (dark complexioned)? Where is my beloved Sati?"

The goddess laughed loudly and replied, "Can't you recognize me? I am your beloved Sati. I am the subtle nature, the destroyer of the universe. Because of being your half-wife, I have become Gaura Varna (Gauri). The ten goddesses whom you are seeing all around me, they are also my different forms. Therefore, O Mahamati Shambhu, you do not need to be afraid."

Goddess Sati said to the frightened Lord Shiva, "The goddess in front of you is Bhimanayan Mahakali, Tara in the sky or space direction, Chhinnamasta on your right, Bhuvaneshwari on your left, Bagalamukhi behind you, in the south-east (Agni Kone) is Dhumavati, in the south-west (Nayritya Kone) is Kamala, in the north-west (Vayu Kone) is Matangi, in the north-east (Ishana Kone) there is Shodashi (Tripur Sundari), and I am present within you in the form of Bhairavi. Therefore, if you wish, I can destroy the Yajna of that arrogant Daksha and teach him a lesson."

Thus, the description of the emergence of ten Mahavidya found in scriptures.
