In Hindu religion, Brihaspati has been given the name of Devaguru. Devaguru resides in Brihaspati Mandala, also known as Brihaspati Loka. Dev Guru Brihaspati is respected by all the deities and is commonly known as Guru. According to the religious scriptures, it is only through Devaguru that the Gods receive Havi etc. Devaguru is also known as Brihaspati Guru. He is the lord of Thursday among the weekdays, also known as Brihaspativar. In the Puranas, Brihaspati Deva has been described as the priest of the gods. Guru is considered the lord of eloquence and knowledge. Because He is the leader of all the planets in the Navagraha Mandala, he is also called Ganapati. Lord Brihaspati has also been called the Purohita, that is, in His absence the Yajnas are not fruitful.
Devaguru Brihaspati composed many books related to subjects like Dharma Shastra, Niti Shastra, Vastu Shastra, and Artha Shastra etc. Devaguru Brihaspati is also the author of Barhaspatya Sutra. Lord Brihaspati plays a very important role in the creation and makes the deities aware of their rights. Various types of demonic powers continuously try to defeat the Gods by creating obstacles in religious activities like Yajnas etc. But Devaguru Brihaspati protects and nurtures the deities through divine Rakshoghna Mantras.
According to the description in Skanda Purana, once upon a time, Brihaspati resided in Prabhas Tirtha and performed rigorous penance for Lord Shiva, as a result of which Lord Shiva was pleased and appeared before him and granted Jupiter the status of Devaguru and planethood.
Jupiter is mentioned in many places in various religious texts. Brihaspati was an ascetic sage, who is also described by the name of Tikshana Sringa. He used to carry a bow and arrows, and a golden halberd and copper-coloured horses used to pull his chariot. Being brave, even warriors worshipped Lord Brihaspati. Brihaspati once defeated Indra and freed the cows. According to beliefs, he is a very kind and benevolent deity and always protects the virtuous who follow the principles of Dharma.
Sage Angira was the father of Devaguru Brihaspati and Devi Surupa was his mother. Brihaspati Deva has three wives, the eldest wife is Shubha, the junior wife is Tara or Taraka, and the third is Mamta. Seven daughters were born from the eldest wife Shubha who became famous by the names of Bhanumati, Raka, Archishmati, Mahamati, Mahishmati, Siniwali and Havishmati. His second wife Tara gave birth to seven sons and one daughter. Brihaspati Deva had two sons named Kach and Bhardwaja from His third wife Mamta.
According to some scriptures, once upon a time, Chandra made unethical relations with Tara, as a result of that Tara conceived a child. Tara gave birth to a son, who became famous throughout the world by the name of Budha and founded the Chandravansha. Guru has filial feelings towards Budha. According to the description found in Mahabharata, Guru Brihaspati had two brothers named Samvarta and Utthya and there was always a discord between Samvarta and Brihaspati.
Jupiter is depicted as golden and yellow in colour. They wear various types of dazzling gold ornaments. Jupiter is dressed in yellow and sits on a lotus flower in a four-armed form. Jupiter holds a golden staff, lotus, Rudraksh rosary and Varad Mudra in his four arms. In other forms related to Devaguru, he has also been depicted holding Kamandal.
According to Rigveda, Devaguru Brihaspati is very beautiful. He resides in a palace made of gold and rides on a chariot made of gold. His chariot is as bright as the sun and is full of all comforts and luxuries. That chariot is pulled by eight yellow horses that move with the speed of the wind.
In Vedic Astrology, Devaguru Brihaspati is said to be the lord of planet Jupiter. The Adhidevata of Guru is Indra, and the Pratyadhidevata is Brahma. In Bhachakra, Jupiter is the lord of Sagittarius and Pisces. It is suggested to fast on every Amavasya Tithi and Thursday and wear Yellow Sapphire to appease the planet Jupiter in the birth chart. The Maha Dasha of Guru lasts for 16 years.
In astrology, Jupiter is considered a very auspicious planet. Jupiter is considered Exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. Surya, Chandra and Mangal are friendly planets for Guru. Budha has been described as the enemy planet of Guru. It is generally fruitful with Shani. Guru is the lord of Punarvasu, Vishakha and Purva Bhadrapada Nakshatras. Yellow colour, gold metal, yellow sapphire, winter season, east direction, space and sky element etc. are said to be related to Guru.
According to Samudrika Shastra, the bulge located at the base of the index finger is called Guru Parvat. By observing Guru Parvat, the person's leadership ability, energy and luck etc. are considered.
