Lord Murugan is one of the most widely worshipped deities in Hinduism. Lord Murugan is also known by various names such as Muruga, Kartikeya, Skanda, Subrahmanya, and Kumaraswami. In South India, especially in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, Lord Murugan is highly revered and is regarded as the commander of the celestial army. Lord Murugan is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

In South India, Tuesday is considered highly auspicious for the worship of Lord Murugan. According to the Navagraha Mandala, among the seven days of the week, Mangalavara is governed by Mangal Deva, and Lord Murugan is considered the presiding deity of Mangala. Devotees observe a one-day Vrat on this day to attain courage and fearlessness, and for relief from debts and diseases.
In South Indian regions, the Tuesday Vrat is known as Chevavai Vratam. On this day, devotees observe fasting with devotion and perform special Puja of Lord Murugan. According to the Tamil Panchang, Tuesdays of the Thai month are considered the most significant. Tuesdays of the Thai month are regarded as highly auspicious and fruitful for both beginning and concluding the Vrat.
On the day of Murugan Mangalavara Vrat, purity and self-discipline hold special importance. Devotees observing the fast generally consume only Phalahara such as coconut water, bananas, apples, etc. Those who break the fast with food take one Sattvic meal, which traditionally includes Panjiri, Payasam, and oil-free dishes.
In Murugan Mangalavara Vrat, the consumption of onion, garlic, meat, alcohol, excessively spicy food, and food containing oil and Ghee is strictly prohibited.
First, wake up during Brahma Muhurta in the morning, complete daily rituals such as bathing, and wear clean clothes. Thereafter, take a Sankalpa to observe the Vrat continuously for 9 Tuesdays - "I shall observe the Vrat and perform Puja for 9 Tuesdays for the removal of all my sufferings, attainment of long life, and fulfilment of all desires, and thereafter perform the Udyapana. May Lord Murugan be pleased and bestow His grace upon me."
Thus, the brief and simple method of Murugan Mangalavara Vrat is completed.
Murugan Mangalavara Vrat is observed continuously for 9 Tuesdays. Thereafter, the Udyapana of the Vrat is performed properly with full devotion.
On the day of Udyapana, first take a bath and perform Tarpana in a sacred river or water body in the morning. If this is not possible, then bathe using water mixed with Gangajal. Thereafter, visit a temple of Lord Murugan and perform Abhisheka or have it performed by a priest. Perform Havan with 108 oblations using the Mantra Om Sharavanabhavaya Namah (ॐ शरवणभवाय नमः।). Thereafter, organize Anna Dana and meals. Feed Brahmanas, unmarried girls, and ascetics, and offer clothes and Dakshina. Offer Karungali Vel, that is, a type of wooden spear, to Lord Murugan.
