Those who believe Lord Buddha as incarnation of Lord Vishnu, observe his birth anniversary as Buddha Jayanti and this day is different from Buddha Purnima.
According to the Hindu Panchang, Buddha Jayanti is observed on the Shukla Navami of the Ashwina month i.e. last day of Sharad Navratri. Buddha Jayanti is the birth anniversary of the Buddha Avatara of Lord Vishnu. Buddha is regarded as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. This Tithi is considered highly sacred, as on this very day, the birth, enlightenment, and Mahaparinirvana of Lord Buddha all took place.
Lord Buddha was born in the Shakya clan in the Lumbini forest near Kapilavastu. His father was King Shuddhodana and his mother was Queen Mayadevi. At the time of birth, he was named Siddhartha. Even while living in the royal palace, Siddhartha developed deep contemplation about the sufferings of the world. After witnessing old age, disease, and death, he resolved to seek the truth of life.
At approximately 29 years of age, he renounced his home and accepted Sannyasa and began intense penance and spiritual practice. After prolonged meditation, he attained enlightenment under the Bodhi Vriksha at Gaya, that is, Bodh Gaya, and came to be known as "Buddha", meaning the awakened one. Thereafter, through his teachings, he propagated the Middle Path, Ahimsa, compassion, and the Ashtangika Marg. His teachings showed society the path of truth, equality, and peace.
On the occasion of Buddha Jayanti, Buddhist followers and devotees worship Lord Buddha and remember his teachings. On this day, Boddha Vihara and temples are decorated, the idols of Lord Buddha are ceremonially bathed, and the Tripitaka and other Buddhist scriptures are recited. Devotees engage in acts of charity, service, meditation, and compassion, and take a resolve to maintain kindness towards all living beings.
Special events are organized on this day at major Buddhist pilgrimage sites such as Bodh Gaya, Sarnath, Kushinagar, and Lumbini. Devotees visit these sacred places to perform meditation, spiritual practices, and worship. In many places, processions, discourses, and religious programs are also organized.
