Padmanabha Dwadashi 2017

According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of the Ashwin month is celebrated as Padmanabha Dwadashi. On this sacred day, devotees observe a Vrat and worship Lord Padmanabha, who is one of the many eternal forms of Lord Vishnu. According to various scriptures, at the beginning of creation, a divine lotus emerged from the navel of Lord Vishnu and upon that lotus sat Lord Brahma, the creator. Hence, since the lotus (Padma) originated from His navel (Nabhi), Lord Vishnu came to be known as Padmanabha.

On the occasion of Padmanabha Dwadashi, devotees of Lord Vishnu observe a fast and perform special worship with devotion. In Hindu Dharma, the Dwadashi Vrat is considered highly significant. Just like the Ekadashi Vrat, the Dwadashi Vrat is also very popular among Vaishnava devotees. In fact, in some regions, Dwadashi Vrat is regarded as even more meritorious than Ekadashi Vrat.

According to the Narada Purana, one should observe a fast on Ashwin Shukla Dwadashi and worship Lord Padmanabha. Because this Tithi is dedicated to Lord Padmanabha, it is known by His name. Observing this Vrat is said to bestow the spiritual merit equivalent to performing one thousand great Yajnas.

Padmanabha Dwadashi Vrat and Puja Vidhi

As described in the Narada Purana, on the day of Ashwin Shukla Dwadashi, one should remain fast, bathe and purify oneself. Then, with devotion, perform the Dugdha Abhisheka of Lord Padmanabha with milk. Thereafter, worship the Lord with the Mantra, Namaste Padmanabhaya। (नमस्ते पद्मनाभाय।) and perform a Havana and Puja using sesame seeds, rice, barley and Ghee according to one's means.

Keep vigil during the night and after completing the vigil, perform the Puja again. After the rituals, offer to a Brahmin one-quarter Pav (approximately 250 grams) of honey along with Dakshina, while reciting the following Mantra -

पद्मनाभ नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वलोकपितामह।
मधुदानेन सुप्रीतो भव सर्वसुखप्रदः॥

Padmanabha Namastubhyam Sarvalokapitamaha।
Madhudanena Suprito Bhava Sarvasukhapradah॥

Meaning - "O Lord Padmanabha, the Pitamaha of all worlds, I bow to You. May You be pleased by this offering of honey and graciously bless me with all forms of happiness."

The Narada Purana mentions that a wise person who observes the Padmanabha Vrat with sincere devotion in this manner attains the spiritual merit equivalent to performing 1000 great Yajnas.
