2022 Dwadashi Shraddha

Dwadashi Shraddha is done for those deceased family members who died on Dwadashi Tithi, including both Shukla and Krishna Paksha Dwadashi. Dwadashi Shraddha Tithi is also suitable to perform Shraddha for those who had taken renunciation (सन्यास) before death.

Dwadashi Shraddha is also known as Baras Shraddha.

Pitru Paksha Shraddhas are Parvan Shraddhas (पार्वण श्राद्ध) and auspicious time to perform them is either Kutup Muhurat and Rohina etc. Muhurat after that till Aparahna Kala gets over. Tarpan (तर्पण) is done at the end of the Shraddha.

Dwadashi Shraddha is a Shraddha ritual performed on the twelfth lunar day, i.e., Dwadashi Tithi of Pitru Paksha. According to Hindu scriptures, performing Shraddha on the same Tithi as that of the ancestor's passing is considered most auspicious. Hence, for those ancestors who passed away on the Dwadashi Tithi of either the Shukla or Krishna Paksha, it is advised to perform Shraddha, Tarpan and Pinda Daan on the Dwadashi Tithi of Pitru Paksha.

Hindu scriptures also mention that Dwadashi Shraddha is especially beneficial for those ancestors who took Sannyasa in order to lead a life devoted to righteousness, devotion and spiritual discipline. It is highly meritorious to perform Shraddha for ancestors who belonged to the Vaishnava tradition. Therefore, Dwadashi Shraddha is also referred to as Sannyasi Shraddha. It is believed that performing Shraddha on this day grants the departed souls a place in Vishnu Loka and bestows them with eternal peace.

According to the Vishnu Dharmasutra, performing Shraddha on Dwadashi along with offerings such as Brahmin Bhoj, donation of clothes, utensils and remembrance of Lord Vishnu brings excellent results. It is also considered highly beneficial to recite the Shri Vishnu Sahasranama on this day.

If the exact date of an ancestor's death is unknown, the scriptures prescribe performing a collective Shraddha on Sarva Pitru Amavasya. However, for those ancestors who passed away specifically on Dwadashi Tithi, it is most appropriate to perform the Shraddha on Dwadashi itself. Dwadashi Shraddha is not merely a religious ritual, but it is a sincere expression of ancestral devotion, familial responsibility and spiritual awareness. This sacred act not only satisfies the departed souls but also brings peace, prosperity and spiritual progress into the lives of their descendants.
