2026 Trayodashi Shraddha

Trayodashi Shraddha is done for those deceased family members who died on Trayodashi Tithi, including both Shukla and Krishna Paksha Trayodashi. Trayodashi Shraddha Tithi is also suitable to perform Shraddha for dead children. This Shraddha Tithi is also known as Kakbali and Balabholani Teras in Gujarat. Trayodashi Shraddha is also known as Teras Shraddha.

Pitru Paksha Shraddhas are Parvan Shraddhas (पार्वण श्राद्ध) and auspicious time to perform them is either Kutup Muhurat and Rohina etc. Muhurat after that till Aparahna Kala gets over. Tarpan (तर्पण) is done at the end of the Shraddha.

According to the Nirnaya Sindhu, the Trayodashi Tithi of Pitru Paksha is extremely significant and greatly beloved by the ancestors. Performing Trayodashi Shraddha on this day satisfies the Pitris for five hundred years. According to Hindu Vedic astrology, if the Trayodashi Tithi during Pitru Paksha coincides with Magha Nakshatra, then even a simple Shraddha and Tarpan performed with water alone on this day satisfies the ancestors for thousands of years.

If Bhadrapada Purnima has passed, then performing Shraddha with Madhu (honey) and Payasa (sweet rice pudding) on a Trayodashi day that coincides with Magha Nakshatra pleases the ancestors and Lord Brahma, who in turn bless the descendants with progeny, health, wealth, fame and heavenly abodes. Even brothers living together in the same household should perform this Shraddha separately. This Shraddha can also be performed during Mal Maas.

The Hemadri, quoting from the Nagarakhanda, states that only a person without children should perform Trayodashi Shraddha. If a person with children performs it, it may lead to the destruction of their lineage.

According to the Garuda Purana, Shraddha should ideally be performed on the exact lunar Tithi on which the ancestor passed away. A Shraddha, Tarpan and Pinda Daan performed precisely on the correct Tithi alone reaches the intended ancestor and satisfies them. Trayodashi Shraddha is also performed for departed children in the family or those ancestors who died at a young age.

If the exact date of death is unknown, the observance of Sarva Pitru Amavasya as a collective Shraddha day for all ancestors is suggested. However, for ancestors who passed away on the Trayodashi Tithi, Shraddha performed on this exact date is considered most fruitful and scripturally valid. Therefore, one should perform Trayodashi Shraddha with devotion for departed ancestors who died on this Tithi.
