2018 Jivitputrika Vrat | Jitiya Vrat

Jivitputrika Vrat is a significant fasting day in which mothers observe Nirjala fasting throughout the day and night for well-being of their children. This fast is a symbol of women's penance, maternal love, and devotion. By observing it with faith, one's children are blessed with long life, good health, radiance, and prosperity.

Jivitputrika Vrat is observed on Krishna Paksha Ashtami in the month of Ashwin as per Purnimanta Hindu lunar calendar. This fasting is mainly observed in Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. In Nepal, Jiviputrika Vrat is popular as Jitiya Vrat.

Jivitputrika Vrat Puja Vidhi

In the Hemadri, this fast is described as Putriya Vrat. As quoted from Hemadri and mentioned in Vrat Parichay, the procedure of Jivitputrika Vrat is as follows -

  • On the Krishna Ashtami of Ashwin month, after completing the morning bath and rituals, one should worship Lord Vasudeva.
  • After that, oblations with Ghee and Kheer should be offered.
  • A woman desiring a son should eat fruits with masculine names such as banana, guava, custard apple, and melon, while a woman desiring a daughter should consume once a day fruits with feminine connotations such as orange, pomegranate, star fruit, and Jamun.
  • By observing this fast throughout the year in this manner, one is blessed with a son.
