Garuda Dwadashi Vrat is primarily observed in Odisha and its neighboring regions. According to the Hindu Panchang, this fast is observed on the Dwadashi Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the Kartika month. Garuda Dwadashi is also known as Utthana Dwadashi. This auspicious Dwadashi is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and His divine mount, Garuda Deva. Garuda Dwadashi is also celebrated as Yogeshwara Dwadashi, in which the Yogeshwara form of Lord Vishnu is worshipped.
On the day of Garuda Dwadashi, Lord Vishnu is worshipped with great devotion using Tulasi leaves. In Hindu scriptures, Garuda Dwadashi holds a highly revered position. It is described as a sacred occasion meant for the joint worship of Lord Vishnu with Garuda Deva and is considered a rare and spiritually auspicious Vrat that brings immense blessings.
It is believed that worshipping Garuda Deva in the presence of Lord Vishnu destroys all obstacles, diseases, fears and sins of the devotee. Garuda Purana states that Garuda is an inseparable part of Lord Vishnu Himself. He is the knower of the Vedas and a symbol of devotion and divine service. By devoutly worshipping Lord Vishnu along with Garuda Deva, the devotee attains devotion, strength and wisdom.
In Puri, Odisha, a grand festival is celebrated at the sacred Shri Jagannatha Temple on the occasion of Garuda Dwadashi. Both Lord Vishnu and Garuda Deva are worshipped with full ritualistic honors. On this holy day, a large number of devotees from different parts of the region visit the Shri Jagannatha Temple to have the divine darshan of their beloved deity.
