Vaishakha Festivals

Vaishakha is the 2nd lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Varuthini Ekadashi - According to the Hindu Purnimanta calendar, Vaishakha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and according to the Amanta Hindu calendar, Chaitra Krishna Paksha Ekadashi is known as Varuthini Ekadashi. This Ekadashi fast fulfills all the wishes.
  2. Parashurama Jayanti - Parashurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu, was born on this day. The birth of Lord Parashurama is celebrated as Parashurama Jayanti. It is believed that Lord Parashurama is still doing penance on Mahendra Parvata.
  3. Akshaya Tritiya - Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is one of the most auspicious days. This day is ruled by god Vishnu, the preserver-god in the Hindu Trinity.
  4. Ganga Saptami - The festival of Ganga Jayanti is related to the rebirth of Gangaji. A sage's Ashram was destroyed by the force of Gangaji, due to which he became angry and drank all the water of the river with his power of penance. With the prayers of the gods, the sage freed Ganga ji again. That is why Ganga ji is also called 'Jahnavi', daughter of sage Jahnu.
  5. Sita Navami - Sita Navami falls on the Shukla Paksha Navami Tithi of Vaishakha Hindu month. Sita Navami is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goddess Sita. This day is also known as Sita Jayanti. On this day, married women observe fast for the long life of their husbands.
  6. Mohini Ekadashi - Ekadashi of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha is observed as Mohini Ekadashi. According to Maharishi Vashishtha, fasting on Mohini Ekadashi destroys all the troubles of a person and due to its virtuous effect, a person is freed from the bondage of attachment.
  7. Narasimha Jayanti - On Narasimha Jayanti day Lord Vishnu appeared in the form of Narasimha, a half lion and half man, to kill Demon Hiranyakashipu. ISKCON and Vaishnava devotees celebrate this date as Narasimha Chaturdashi with great joy and observe a one-day fast to please Lord Narasimha.
  8. Buddha Purnima - The date and time of the birth anniversary of Lord Buddha, who showed the path of truth, non-violence, compassion, kindness and supreme peace to mankind, is available on this page. Lord Buddha is also considered to be the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu.
  9. Kurma Jayanti - Kurma Jayanti Muhurat is given on this page. Kurma Jayanti is the birth anniversary of Kurma Avatara of Lord Vishnu. Kurma was the second of the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu.
