Magha is the 11th lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Sakat Chauth - Lord Ganesha is worshipped on Sakat Chauth. Worshiping Lord Ganesha on this day brings happiness and prosperity. The festival of Sakat Chauth is also dedicated to Sakat Mata and on this day, mothers observe the fast for the well-being of their sons.
  2. Shattila Ekadashi - According to Purnimanta Hindu calendar, Magha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and according to Amanta Hindu calendar, Pausha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi is observed as Shattila Ekadashi. On this day, sesame is used in six ways like sesame bath, sesame Ubatana, sesame Havana etc.
  3. Vasant Panchami - Saraswati Puja Muhurat on Vasant Panchami is given on this page. Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge, music and art, is worshipped on Vasant Panchami day. Yellow flowers are offered to Maa Saraswati on this day.
  4. Ratha Saptami - Snan Muhurat on Ratha Saptami is given on this page. Saptami Tithi is dedicated to Lord Surya. It is believed that Lord Surya Dev started enlightening the whole world on Ratha Saptami day. Ratha Saptami is also known as Surya Jayanti
  5. Bhishma Ashtami - Magha Shukla Ashtami is death anniversary of Bhishma Pitamaha and this day is known as Bhishma Ashtami. On this day, Hindus perform Ekoddishta Shraddha rituals for Bhishma Pitamaha. Bhishma Pitamaha is one of the most important personalities described in the Mahabharata.
  6. Jaya Ekadashi - According to the Hindu calendar, Magha Shukla Ekadashi is observed as Jaya Ekadashi. According to the description found in religious texts, by fasting on this Ekadashi, a person liberates from taking birth as the spirits, ghosts and similar entities.
