Paush Festivals

Paush is the 10th lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Saphala Ekadashi - According to Purnimanta Hindu calendar, Pausha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi and according to Amanta Hindu calendar, Margashirsha Krishna Paksha Ekadashi is known as Saphala Ekadashi. By observing this fast along with night vigil, one gets the results of thousands of years of penance.
  2. Pausha Putrada Ekadashi - According to the Hindu calendar, Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Pausha month is observed as Pausha Putrada Ekadashi. Shukla Paksha Ekadashi of Shravana month is also called Putrada Ekadashi. Pausha Putrada Ekadashi is more popular in the northern Indian states and Shravana Putrada Ekadashi is more popular in other states.
  3. Banada Ashtami - Shakambhari Navratri begins on Pausha Shukla Ashtami and ends on Pausha Purnima. Pausha Shukla Ashtami is known as Banada Ashtami. In Hinduism, Shakambhari Mata is worshipped as the Goddess of vegetables, fruits and green leaves.
  4. Shakambhari Purnima - Shakambhari Purnima, which is also known as Shakambari Jayanti, is the last day of Shakambari Navratri. According to the Hindu scriptures, Goddess Bhagwati was incarnated in the form of Goddess Shakambhari to mitigate severe food crisis on the Earth.
  5. Pausha Purnima - Pausha Purnima is a significant day in Hindu calendar. Taking a holy dip in Ganga on this day is considered extremely virtuous. It marks the beginning of one-month long austerity period which is observed during Magha month. Shakambhari Jayanti is also celebrated on this day.
