According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of Vaishakha month is known as Parashurama Dwadashi or Rukmini Dwadashi. According to various traditions, this day is dedicated to the worship of Parashurama incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Parashurama is regarded as the sixth incarnation among the ten principal Avatars of Lord Vishnu, known as Dashavatara. Since Lord Parashurama is none other than Lord Vishnu Himself, performing Puja of Lord Vishnu alone on this day is said to bestow the complete merit of the observance. Hence, devotees faithfully observe fasts and worship Lord Vishnu with devotion on the auspicious occasion of Parashurama Dwadashi.
According to the scriptures, Dana, i.e., donation performed on Vaishakha Shukla Dwadashi is especially meritorious. Padma Purana states that by donating food, water, clothing or gold on this day, one receives infinite merit. Many Hindu scriptures extol the greatness of observing the Dwadashi fast.
As mentioned in the Narada Purana and Bhavishya Purana, one should worship Lord Madhusudana on Vaishakha Shukla Dwadashi. Among the numerous sacred names of Lord Vishnu, Madhusudana is one of His most revered names. Therefore, this Dwadashi is also known as Madhusudana Dwadashi.
According to the procedure described in the Narada Purana, one should observe a fast on Vaishakha Shukla Dwadashi and bathe the Lord Madhusudana with pure milk measured in a Kalasha. During the night, devotees should stay awake and worship the Lord three times. After performing the complete worship of Lord Madhusudana, offer 108 oblations into the sacred fire while reciting the following Mantra -
नमस्ते मधुहन्त्रे च नमस्ते पुष्करेक्षण।
कैटभघ्न नमस्तेऽस्तु सुब्रह्मण्य नमोऽस्तु ते॥
Namaste Madhuhantre Cha Namaste Pushkarekshana।
Kaitabhaghna Namasteastu Subrahmanya Namoastu Te॥
Meaning - "Salutations to You, O Slayer of the demon Madhu! Salutations to You, O Lotus-eyed Lord! Salutations to You, O Destroyer of the demon Kaitabha! O Supremely Pure and All-auspicious One, my reverent salutations to You again and again."
Use Ghee for the oblations according to your capacity. By observing the Vaishakha Shukla Dwadashi Vrat with this method, one becomes freed from all sins and attains the merit equivalent to performing eight Ashvamedha Yajnas.
