After listening to the Soma Pradosha Vrat Katha, Sage Shaunaka said to Suta Ji - "Kindly narrate the story of Mangala Pradosha now."
Suta Ji said - "Now I will describe the Mangala Trayodashi Pradosha Vrat according to the prescribed procedure. Mangalavara, i.e., Tuesday, is considered the destroyer of diseases and ailments. During this Vrat, one should eat food made of wheat and jaggery only once during the day. On this day, red-colored flowers should be offered to Lord Shiva, and one should also wear red-colored clothes. By observing this Vrat, one undoubtedly becomes free from all kinds of sins and diseases. Now I will narrate to you the story of the old woman who observed this Vrat and, through its influence, attained Moksha.
In ancient times, there lived an old woman in a certain city. She had a son named Mangaliya. The old woman was an ardent devotee of Lord Hanuman. Every Tuesday, she observed Lord Hanuman's Vrat and offered Him Bhoga and other ritual offerings according to the complete rituals. Apart from this, on Tuesdays she neither smeared her house with mud nor dug the earth.
In this manner, the old woman continued observing the Vrat regularly for a long time. Once, Lord Hanuman decided to test her devotion. Assuming the guise of a Sadhu, Hanuman Ji arrived at the old woman's door and called out - 'Is there any devotee of Hanuman here who can fulfill My wish?' Hearing the call, the old woman came outside and asked - 'Maharaja! What is your command?'
Lord Hanuman, disguised as a Sadhu, said - 'I am extremely hungry! I will eat food, so smear a small piece of land for Me.' The old woman became perplexed and humbly said to the Sadhu - 'O Maharaja! Except for smearing the ground and digging the earth, I am ready to do whatever else you command.'
After testing her three times, the Sadhu said - 'Bring your son here. I will make him lie down, kindle a fire upon his back, and cook My food there.'
Hearing this, the old woman became deeply distressed, but she had already given her word to the Sadhu. Therefore, to uphold her promise, she handed over her son Mangaliya to the Sadhu Maharaja. However, Hanuman Ji, in the guise of a Sadhu, wished to test the old woman even further. Thus, He made the old woman herself lay Mangaliya face down and kindle a fire upon his back with her own hands.
After lighting the fire, the old woman went inside her house with a distressed heart. When the food had been prepared, the Sadhu called out to her and said - 'Now call Mangaliya as well, so that he may also come and partake of the Bhoga.'
With tearful eyes, the old woman said - 'Please don't torment my heart further by taking his name now.' However, the Sadhu Maharaja insisted that she call her son. Seeing that the Sadhu would not relent, the old woman called out to her son. The moment she called him, Mangaliya came running happily and playfully before her. Seeing Mangaliya safe and unharmed, the old woman was filled with immense joy and astonishment. Again and again, she bowed at the feet of the Sadhu Maharaja.
Then Lord Hanuman, disguised as the Sadhu, revealed His true form to the old woman. Upon beholding Lord Hanuman directly before her, the old woman considered her life blessed. Thus, through the merit of observing Mangala Pradosha Vrat, the old woman attained welfare and spiritual upliftment."
