According to the Hindu Panchang, the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of Bhadrapada month is celebrated as Kalki Dwadashi. Kalki Avatara is one of the ten principal incarnations, i.e., Dashavatara of Lord Vishnu. As per the Hindu scriptures, Lord Vishnu will incarnate as Kalki at the end of the Kaliyuga. Observing a fast and worshipping Lord Vishnu on the day of Kalki Dwadashi absolves one of all kinds of sins and grants the devotee residence in Vishnu Loka.
According to the Dwadashi Vrat Mahatmya described in Narada Purana and the Bhavishya Purana, one should worship Lord Hrishikesha on the Shukla Paksha Dwadashi Tithi of the Bhadrapada month. Hrishikesha is one of the many sacred names of Lord Vishnu. Therefore, this Dwadashi is also known as Hrishikesha Dwadashi.
As described in the Bhavishya Purana and the Padma Purana, if the Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi coincides with the Shravana Nakshatra, it is known as Shravana Dwadashi. When Dwadashi also falls on a Wednesday, it becomes even more auspicious. Observing the Shravana Dwadashi Vrat is believed to yield the combined merits of all other Dwadashi fasts.
As per the procedure mentioned in the Narada Purana, one should observe a fast on the day of Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi and perform the Abhisheka of Lord Hrishikesha, the Supreme Guru of the universe, using milk contained in a sacred vessel, i.e., Kalasha. Thereafter, worship the Lord with the Mantra, Hrishikesha Namastubhyam। (हृषीकेश नमस्तुभ्यम्।) and offer 108 oblations into the sacred fire using Charu (sweet rice pudding) mixed with honey.
After completing the Havan, keep vigil or Jagarana during the night and perform worship of the Lord three times. Then, offer to a learned Brahmin one and a half Adhaka, approximately six Seers of wheat along with Gold as Dakshina, according to your capacity. While donating, recite the following Mantra and pray -
हृषीकेश नमस्तुभ्यं सर्वलौकेकहेतवे।
मह्यं सर्वसुखं देही गोधूमस्य प्रदानतः॥
Hrishikesha Namastubhyam Sarvalaukekahetave।
Mahyam Sarvasukham Dehi Godhumasya Pradanatah॥
Meaning - "O Lord Hrishikesha, Master of the senses and cause of all worlds, I bow to You. May You be pleased by this humble offering of wheat and bless me with all kinds of happiness."
After completing this offering, offer food to Brahmins according to your capacity and later partake of food yourself in silence. By observing the Bhadrapada Shukla Dwadashi Vrat in this manner, a person becomes free from all sins and attains the great merit equivalent to performing a Maha Yajna.
