Chaitra Festivals

Chaitra is the 1st lunar month in Hindu calendar.

In Hindu Calendar, there are two methods to mark the lunar month. In one, lunar month is marked from Purnima to Purnima (known as Purnimanta calendar) and in other lunar month is marked from Amavasya to Amavasya (known as Amanta calendar).

  1. Sheetala Ashtami - After Holi, Krishna Paksha Ashtami is celebrated as Shitala Ashtami or Basoda Puja. This festival is dedicated to Goddess Shitala who provides good health to the devotees. In this Puja, stale food prepared a day before is offered as Prasadam.
  2. Papamochani Ekadashi - Papamochani Ekadashi is one of the twenty-four Ekadashi Vrat(s) which are observed to seek the blessing of Lord Vishnu. By observing this fast, all kinds of sins are destroyed. Papamochani Ekadashi falls between Holika Dahan and Chaitra Navratri.
  3. Ranga Panchami - It is believed, on Ranga Panchami, Lord Krishna played Holi of colors and Gulal with Shri Radha Rani. At some places in India Holi is played on Ranga Panchami. It usually falls after five days of Holi festivity in rest of India.
  4. Ghatasthapana - The Auspicious time and Abhijit Muhurat is given for performing Ghatasthapana on Chaitra Navratri. Ghatasthapana is one of the significant rituals during Chaitra Navratri. It marks the beginning of nine days festivity. Ghatasthapana is also known as Kalash Sthapana.
  5. Ugadi - Ugadi marks the beginning of the New Year according to the lunisolar calendar. This festival is also known as Yugadi. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Karnataka, Ugadi is celebrated as a festival on the first day of the year. On this day, a new Samvatsara begins.
  6. Gudi Padwa - Gudi Padwa or Samvatsar Padvo is celebrated as the first day of the year by Maharashtrians and Konkanis according to Luni-Solar calendar. Gudi Padwa is celebrated as Ugadi by the people of Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
  7. Gangaur - According to Hindu calendar, Shuka Paksha Tritiya of Chaitra month is celebrated as Gangaur. The consort of Lord Shiva, Gauri is worshipped during Gangaur festival. Both married and unmarried women worship Goddess Gauri on this day.
  8. Yamuna Chhath - Goddess Yamuna descended on earth on the holy festival of Yamuna Chhath. Yamuna Chhath is also celebrated as Yamuna Jayanti. In mythology, Goddess Yamuna is said to be the wife of Lord Krishna. Hence, she is revered by the people of Brij.
  9. Rama Navami - Hindu devotees celebrate the birth anniversary of Lord Rama on Rama Navami. On this day, Lord Ram was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya of Ayodhya. Visit this page to know the date and time of the upcoming Rama Navami.
  10. Kamada Ekadashi - According to Hindu Panchang, Ekadashi of Chaitra Shukla Paksha is known as Kamada Ekadashi. Fasting on Kamada Ekadashi liberates one from grave sins like Brahma Hatya. As a result of this fast, one gets spiritual peace and devotion.
