According to Shrimad Devi Bhagavata Purana, Goddess Durga manifested to protect the Vedas and Puranas, and to destroy demonic forces. As described in Rigveda, Goddess Durga is the manifestation of Adi Shakti, a primordial energy that sustains the entire Universe and Who is eternal. An unmarried girl and a Kalash are considered symbols of Goddess Durga. Jagadamba, Adi Shakti and Narayani are epithets of Goddess Durga. As per beliefs, Goddess Durga governs all the celestial bodies in solar system.

Goddess Durga Origin

Goddess Durga is also known as Sati. She was born as the daughter of Daksha Prajapati and revered as Sati during that time.

Once, Daksha Prajapati organized a grand Yajna and invited all the Gods and Goddesses, but didn't invite Lord Shiva and Sati. Despite not being invited, Sati attended the Yajna hosted by her father. However, when Daksha insulted Lord Shiva during the Yajna ceremony, an enraged Goddess Sati assumed the form of Ugrachandi and destroyed the Yajna.

Goddess Ugrachandi has an extremely fierce appearance with 18 arms. The followers of Shakta Sampradaya and the devotees especially observe the worship of Goddess Ugrachandi on Krishna Paksha Navami of Ashwina month as per Amanta (Kartika month as per Purnimanta) in Hindu Calendar, to commemorate the manifestation of the Goddess on that day. Later, Goddess Ugrachandi became known as Goddess Durga after She slaughtered the demon Durgama.

Goddess Durga Family

Goddess Durga is described as Shakti, the divine energy of Lord Shiva. According to beliefs, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Durga are the same divine mothers. Hence, Lord Ganesha and Kumar Kartikeya are the sons of Goddess Durga, while Ashoka Sundari, Jyoti and Manasa Devi are Her daughters.
