Goddess Gayatri

Goddess Gayatri

Goddess Gayatri is the manifestation of Goddess Saraswati and consort of Lord Brahma. Goddess Gayatri is regarded as Veda Mata i.e. the mother of all Vedas. Goddess Gayatri is venerated as Hindu Trimurti i.e. Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Mahesh. She is the embodiment of Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Parvati and Goddess Saraswati.

Gayatri Mantra is one of the most well-known Vedic hymns dedicated to the Goddess of Veda.

Gayatri Family

Goddess Gayatri is the consort of Lord Brahma. As per various legends mentioned in Vedic texts, Lord Brahma wanted to perform Yajna along with His consort, Goddess Saraswati. The completion of Yajna was not possible without the presence of the wife and the Goddess Saraswati was not available.

To make up for Her absence, Lord Brahma requested the priest to search for a woman whom he could marry to complete the Yajna. On the request of Lord Brahma, the priest found a suitable woman named Gayatri and got her married to Lord Brahma. It is believed that the woman was the incarnation of Goddess Saraswati herself.

Gayatri Iconography

Goddess Gayatri is typically portrayed with five faces. She is mounted on the lotus flower. The five faces of Goddess Gayatri symbolize five Pranas i.e. Prana, Apana, Vyana, Udana and Samana. They also symbolize five elements of the universe i.e. the earth, the water, the fire, the air and the sky.

Goddess Gayatri has ten hands. She carries the weapons of Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva in her hands. Usually Goddess Gayatri is depicted with Shankh (conch), Chakra (discus), lotus flowers, goad and the noose. Two of the hands of Goddess Gayatri are shown in Abhaya Mudra and Varada Mudra. Among all goddesses, Gayatri is the only goddess having Tri-Netra i.e. three eyes like Lord Shiva.
