Ramalakshmana Dwadashi Katha

Ramalakshmana Dwadashi Vrat Katha

Story of King Dasharatha being blessed with four sons by observing Dwadashi Vrat

Rishi Durvasa says - "Just as the Parashurama Dwadashi Vrat is observed on the Shukla Dwadashi of the Vaishakha month, in the same way, the Shri Rama-Lakshmana Dwadashi Vrat is observed in the Shukla Paksha of the Jyeshtha month. On this occasion, a person should worship the Supreme Lord with various kinds of pure and fragrant flowers.

While reciting Om Ramabhiramaya Namah (ॐ रामाभिरामाय नमः), worship the feet of the Lord. Similarly, with Om Trivikramaya Namah (ॐ त्रिविक्रमाय नमः), worship the waist; with Om Dhritavishvaya Namah (ॐ धृतविश्वाय नमः), worship His abdomen; with Om Samvatsaraya Namah (ॐ संवत्सराय नमः), worship the heart; with Om Samvartakaya Namah (ॐ संवर्तकाय नमः), worship the neck; with Om Sarvastradharine Namah (ॐ सर्वास्त्रधारिणे नमः), worship the arms; and with Om Sahasrashirase Namah (ॐ सहस्रशिरसे नमः), worship the head of the Lord. With Om Panchajanyaya Namah (ॐ पाञ्चजन्याय नमः), worship the conch, and with Om Sudarshanachakraya Namah (ॐ सुदर्शनचक्राय नमः), worship the Chakra, i.e., discus.

After performing the worship in the above manner, properly establish a Kalasha and cover it with a cloth. Thereafter, place upon the Kalasha golden idols of Lord Rama and Shri Lakshmana. Then perform their worship according to the Shodashopachara method. A person desiring a son should, in the morning, donate those idols to Brahmins.

There is an ancient account that King Dasharatha, the ruler of Ayodhya, had no sons. Therefore, he remained extremely distressed. At one time, with a desire for progeny in his heart, Dasharatha approached Sage Vashistha and, after worshipping him in various ways, said - 'O revered sage! I have come to your refuge with the desire for a son in my heart. Kindly guide me.'

Moved by Dasharatha's heartfelt prayer, Maharshi Vashistha explained to him in detail the method of observing the Jyeshtha Shukla Dwadashi Vrat. After receiving the instruction from Sage Vashistha, King Dasharatha properly observed the Dwadashi Vrat. As a result of this highly meritorious Vrat, Lord Shri Hari Himself incarnated as Lord Rama, the son of Dasharatha."

Sage Durvasa says - "O great sage! At that time, the Supreme Being, Lord Shri Hari, divided Himself into four forms, who became renowned in all the worlds as Rama, Lakshmana, Bharata, and Shatrughna.

This is the fruit attained in this world; now listen to the spiritual merit of the Dwadashi Vrat in the next world. A person who devoutly observes this Vrat enjoys various kinds of divine luxuries in heaven along with Devaraja Indra, the king of the Gods, and all the Gods for as long as he resides there. Thereafter, when that period comes to an end, he is born again in the mortal world. Taking birth here, he becomes established as a king who performs one hundred Yajnas.

A devotee who observes this Vrat with a selfless attitude is freed from all sins. Moreover, he attains the Kaivalya state of Lord Shri Hari, which is supremely pure and eternal."

॥Thus concludes Shri Rama-Lakshmana Dwadashi Vrat Mahatmya described in Shri Varaha Purana॥
