Soma Pradosha Katha

Soma Pradosha Vrat Katha

Story of Poor Widow Brahmini and her Son

After listening to the story of Ravi Pradosha Vrat, the sages headed by Shaunaka said - "O great Muni Suta Ji! Now kindly narrate to us the story of Soma Trayodashi Pradosha."

Suta Ji said - "O sages! Now I will describe the glory of Soma Trayodashi Vrat. By observing this Vrat, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati become pleased. After completing the morning bath and daily rituals, meditate upon Shiva-Parvati, worship Them, and offer Arghya. Chant the Mantra Om Namah Shivaya (ॐ नमः शिवाय) 108 times. Thereafter, praise Lord Shiva by saying - 'O God! I am drowning in this sorrowful ocean of worldly existence. I am afflicted by the burden of debts and adverse planetary influences. O Compassionate One! Please protect me.'"

The sages headed by Shaunaka asked - "O great sage! You have described this Vrat for the fulfillment of all desires. Now kindly tell us who observed this Vrat and what fruits were obtained through it."

Suta Ji said - "In a certain city lived a Brahmani. Her husband had passed away. She had no support. Therefore, every morning she would go out for alms with her son, and whatever alms she received, she used for maintaining herself and her son.

One day, while the Brahmani was returning after begging for alms, she came across a boy on the way whose condition was extremely pitiable. The Brahmani felt compassion for the boy and brought him home with her.

That boy was actually the prince of Vidarbha. The king of a neighboring kingdom had attacked his father and seized control of his kingdom. This was the reason for his miserable condition. The Brahmani kept him in her house and began raising him just like her own son.

Once, the Brahmani's son and the prince were playing together when some Gandharva Kanya arrived there and became enchanted by the prince. The Brahmin boy returned home, but the prince remained there conversing with a Gandharva Kanya named Anshumati. The next day, Anshumati brought her parents to meet the prince. Her parents were also greatly impressed upon seeing him.

A few days later, Lord Shiva appeared in their dream and instructed them to marry their daughter to the prince. Following Lord Shiva's command, they got Anshumati married to the prince.

The Brahmani had received instructions from sages to observe Pradosha Vrat throughout her life. Due to the merit of that Vrat, the prince, with the assistance of King Gandharvaraja's army, defeated the enemies of Vidarbha and regained his father's kingdom. Thereafter, he began ruling happily and prosperously. The prince appointed the Brahmin boy as his Prime Minister.

Just as the fortunes of the prince and the Brahmin boy changed through the observance of Pradosha Vrat by the Brahmani, similarly Lord Shiva grants happiness and prosperity to His other devotees as well. Therefore, Pradosha Vrat holds immense significance in creation."
