Varahi Matrika is also listed among the seven Goddesses revered as Sapta Matrikas in Hinduism. Varahi Matrika is the divine feminine power of the Varaha Avatara of Lord Vishnu. She is the manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi. The worship of Goddess Varahi blesses Her devotees with happiness and prosperity. In sacred texts of Hinduism, Goddess Varahi is described as Kaivalyarupini, which means Kaivalya or the Goddess who bestows absolute liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Goddess Varahi is the commander-in-chief of Goddess Lalita's army and is also known as Danda Nayika. In Tantric literature, five forms of Goddess Varahi are described as Svapna Varahi, Chanda Varahi, Mahi Varahi (Bhairavi), Kraccha Varahi and Matsya Varahi.

According to the account found in Shri Durga Saptashati, when Shumbha, along with his demon army, attacked Goddess Chandika, then Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Devaraja Indra and Kumara Kartikeya manifested divine powers from their bodies who were accomplished with the respective qualities and characteristics of each God, to assist the Goddess Chandika in the battle. Accordingly, Lord Vishnu manifested Goddess Varahi, the divine feminine power of his Varaha Avatara. Fundamentally, the divine feminine power of Lord Vishnu is Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore, the divine power of His Varaha Avatara, Goddess Varahi, is regarded as the manifestation of Goddess Lakshmi Herself.
The form and appearance of Goddess Varahi resemble that of Lord Varaha. Goddess Varahi has Shyama Varna, i.e., dark complexion and She is depicted in Her Chaturbhuja Rupa, i.e., four-arm form, mounted upon a buffalo. Varahi Matrika carries a staff and a plough in Her two hands while Her two remaining hands are raised in Abhaya Mudra and Varada Mudra.
